Saina Nehwal beat World Champions Carolina Marin in her second group B match at the BWF World Super Series finals played in Dubai just few moments ago. It was an extraordinary performance by Saina who lost her first match easily but came back strongly against Carolina Marin.
In the first game Marin began well taking the first point. Saina Nehwal took 3 successive points to take a 3-1 lead and after that she took a 5-2. She slipped soon after that and everybody thought she could not play.
Saina continued to dominate Marin and took a commanding 9-3. After that Marin made an excellent come back. She took 6 successive points to level the score at 9-9. Soon after Marin led 10-9 and then Saina came back to equal at 10-10. At the interval Saina Nehwal led 11-10. After the interval Marin again equaled the score at 11-11.
Both players fought for each point. Carolina Marin led 14-12 and then 15-12. Saina took 5 successive points to lead at 17-15. Saina Nehwal was leading 19-16 but Marin came back strongly to equal the score at 19-19. Both players fought for each point. Saina Nehwal Marin had one match point but Saina saved it and then got 2 points to take the first set 23-21.
In the second game both players took alternate points to equal the score at 5-5. Marin then played some excellent smashes and drop shots. At the interval Marin led 11-6. After the interval Saina looked tired and was not able to pick shots that were placed on side. From 12-7 Marin took 6 successive points to take 18-7 lead. Marin won the second set 21-9 easily.
In the third and deciding game both players began took alternate points till 4-4. From 6-5 Saina Nehwal 4 successive points to take a 10-5 lead. Marin then tried to come back into the match and reduced the gap to 8-10. At the interval Saina led 11-8. After the interval Saina played some excellent badminton and took 5 successive points to take 16-8 lead. Marin made a lot of mistakes in third game. Saina Nehwal won the third set 21-12.
She will face Tai Tzu Ying and a win will keep her hopes alive of reaching the semi finals intact.
