India outclassed Korea 3-0 to finish creditable ninth in the BWF World Junior (Under-19) Mixed Team Badminton Championships at Lima, Peru. In the last edition, India had finished 13th.
In the play-off match to decide the ninth spot, Indian teenage shuttlers performed well to register an impressive victory. The pair Krishna Prasad Garaga and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy provided a flying start. The lead was increased by Ruthvika Shivani. Nasals Yadav then won his boys singles match to clinch the tie. Indian Krishna Prasad Garaga-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy beat Min Hyuk Kang-Su Min Lim 21-17, 21-19 in the first match; G Ruthvika Shivani beat Ye Rim Shim 21-10, 21-14 in the second match; Ansal Yadav beat Woo Hyuk Kang 17-21, 21-13, 24-22 to complete the play-off.
In the classification match to decide the placing between 9 and 12, India had trounced Germany without losing a single game. MR Arjun-Chirag Shetty beat Bjarne Geiss-Jan Colin Volker 21-18, 21-17; Sri Krishna Priya K bt Miranda Wilson 21-10, 21-11; Siril Verma beat Felix Hammes 21-14, 21-13).. Indian team started in style by routing El Salvador 5-0 in their opening match of the Group A2. They got a walkover from Zambia in their next league encounter. In the tie against the USA played on Thursday, Indian boys’ doubles pair of MR Arjun and Chirag Shetty provided a wonderful start. The lead was doubled by senior national champion Ruthvika Shivani by winning the girls singles. Siril Verma had no problem in winning the boys singles to take an unbeatable 3-0 lead. Although, the women’s doubles pair of JK Malavika and Karishma Wadkar lost to USA duo of Jamie Hsu and Crystal Pan in three games, India made sure they reach the knock-out stage
