Till the end of 2013 Indian Premier League, none of the IPL teams can overtake Mumbai Indians when it comes to fans support across the world. The main reason for this was the presence of Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar. Along with CSK, Mumbai Indians are the most stable IPL team for the past 2-3 seasons. But this time around, Sachin won’t be available to play for them but he will cheer his team from the dugout. Mumbai Indians led by Rohit Sharma go into this tournament as the defending Indian Premier League Champions and Champions League T20 Champions.

In the 2014 IPL Auctions, Mumbai Indians acquired the services of Corey Anderson, Mike Hussey etc. With the likes of Pollard, Anderson, Malinga in their ranks can the Mumbai Indians repeat what they managed to do last year? The team will be confident to perform well and do what they do the best i.e. winning matches. Here is an analysis and pre-tournament preview for the Mumbaikars.

Players to watch out for:

Rohit Sharma

The fortunes ofMumbai Indians in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League depends on how their skipper Rohit Sharma plays. He has been a consistent player for India for the past one year and he had dismissed the talks on him being a player capable of scoring runs only in IPL. He has also proved his captaincy skills in the previous edition. Rohit provides stability in the batting order and anchors a big run chase. Not to forget his fielding Skills. Now it’s time for Rohit to set the stage on fire and successfully lead his side to defend the IPL crown.

Mike Hussey

Mike Hussey is one of the rarest batsmen who get better with his age. He was the most consistent batsmen when he played for Australia and when he retired from International Cricket, he still continued to dominate the batsmen. He was one of the main reason behind CSK’s journey till the finals of 2013 IPL where he won the Orange Cap for being the leading run scorer. Even in the 2014 Big Bash League, he was the lone star for his side Sydney Thunders. This time he turns out for CSK’s arch rivals Mumbai Indians where he is expected to fill the big shoes of Sachin Tendulkar. The team management will be hoping Hussey to get them off to a flying start when he comes out to bat. He is also a safe fielder as well.

Kieron Pollard

Kieron Pollard is a player who is tailor-made to the Twenty20 format and he broke out of nowhere with his heroics for Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean T20 league and CLT20. He is a Big Hitter and brings lot of value to the team. He can explode with the bat anytime. Spending 2-3 overs at the crease will have a significant impact on the run rate. He missed the on-field action for the past six months due to a knee injury that made him unavailable for the World T20. After taking the field, he looked in good knick for Trinidad and Tobago in the domestic tournament. Adding to his swashbuckling batting abilities, Pollard is also a handy bowler and a live wire on field.

Mumbai’s Spin Twins

Mumbai Indians’ spin twinsPragyan Ojha and Harbhajan Singh will play a key role in containing the run flow in the middle overs. Ojha is in the selectors’ scheme of things for the Test matches and had a decent series against West Indies way back in November 2013. Both of them are in fine form in the recent past and the Mumbai Indians management would like them to replicate the success in IPL as well. A good IPL season for Harbhajan will see him donning the Indian colors soon.

Possible Playing XI:

Aditya Tare, Michael Hussey, Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu, Corey Anderson, Kieron Pollard, CM Gautam, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Lasith Malinga/Krishmar Santokie, Pragyan Ojha
