2017 ICC Champions Trophy: Darren Lehmann Thinks Pay Dispute May ‘Distract’ Australian Players

The stalemate between Cricket Australia and Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) has made national Australian team chief coach Darren Lehmann think over the pay dispute, who opined it might lead to a distraction for the visitors while competing in the ICC mega event in England and Wales in the upcoming 2017 ICC Champions Trophy.

“It is going to be a bit of a distraction there’s no doubt about that. But at the end of the day we’re there to concentrate on the cricket, we’ve got to do the best job we possibly can so from my point of view they’ve just got to get talking, simple fact of life,” was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

However, former cricketer and President of ACA, Lehmann has urged both the parties to reach the agreement as soon as possible while following the new agreement deal.

“What I want to do is see both parties come to the table and get a deal done for the betterment of the game. From the grass roots right through to the elite cricketers,” Lehmann added.

The 47-year-old South Australia-born Lehmann made his remark after CA chief executive James Sutherland has rejected the request for ‘independent mediation’ from ACA.

“From a players point of view they’re sticking together, we support players and support CA. Everyone supports each other, it is just a case of getting a deal done. Once they get that they’ll get a deal done, and once that happens we’ll be right and get the game going the way it should be,” Lehmann said.

Lehmann also stated players are wrestling with its board to maintain the payment method based on the revenue model to get the deal done for the upcoming Memorandum of Understanding as he further avoided sharing the details with the media.

The highly-paid Head Coach has been at the helm to witness the major changes in Cricket Australia itself followed by its players.

The reports suggested it’s the final tournament before new pay deal is expected to take place in July as the current deal would expire on June 30 respectively.

While dismissing the speculations of top cricketers might skip the traditional Ashes series, Lehmann stated despite the unrest in the cricket board over a payment policy for its players as he wants a desired resolution at the earliest.

“I wouldn’t think so, and I would hope not as a fan,” Lehmann asserted.

While talking about the rift between two parties, Lehmann feels it’s the part and parcel of sport and better communication can make such a massive difference.

“I was there as a player and a delegate and then president. You have those issues, every sport has them, so it’s just about communication and getting the right outcome for both parties. That’s the key,” Lehmann further added.

In the Group A match, Australia will start off their campaign against their arch-rivals New Zealand on June 2 at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

Lehmann played 117 One-day Internationals, 27 Tests for Australia in which he amassed 3078, 1798 runs respectively.

The slow left-arm orthodox Lehmann has also claimed 52 ODI wickets and 15 Test scalps for Australia before playing his last international fixture in 2005 against Pakistan.
