2017 ICC Champions Trophy: England Vs Australia – England Player’s Ratings

In a do-or-die game, Austalia was handed a defeat by their arch-rivals England, who already had one seat booked in the semi-final of the Champions Trophy. Kangaroos did have a solid start in the defence of their total but failed to put a cap on their middle order, which kept them away from the game. Skipper  Eoin Morgan led by an example, scoring 87 runs so as the Test vice-captain Ben Stokes, who scored a century (102*) and stayed there till the end.

By continuing their winning run, England is going in the semi-final with an unbeaten streak in the group stages which automatically puts their opposition under pressure, an advantage which they will cherish.

Let’s convert the performance of players in numerical terms and find their contribution in the game –

Jason Roy 0/5 –

By giving a number of chances to him, skipper Eoin Morgan has put himself into a big trouble whether to replace him in the big semi-final or not because once again, the opening batsman disappointed and was dismissed on a score of four. There might be a case when finally Roy gets dropped for the semis, making way for some other player on the bench.

Alex Hales 0/5 –

At that point of time, England needed one of the two openers to stand up and with Roy already deciding to disappoint, the onus was on Hales to do the job but he was dismissed on a duck, making way for Australia to come into the game.

Joe Root 1/5 –

The Test skipper got a good start and it looked like he will continue his form and given the stage, he was the need of the team but Australian bowler Josh Hazlewood took no time to get him caught behind at a score of 15, giving Australia another opportunity to come back into the game. It was a big moment in the game from where Australia could gain momentum and capitalise on it.

Eoin Morgan 5/5 –

Morgan has stood out as the best captain in this tournament. Under him, England had won all their contests and along with that, he had done well with the bat as well. In this game, it was a real test for him to play a captain’s innings and defeat arch-rivals Australia, a task which he accomplished. With an innings of 87, Morgan laid the base to a win alongside Ben Stokes and only returned back after putting his team on the brink of a win.

Ben Stokes 5/5 –

Along with the five points, he also deserves a rating of A+. Stokes has emerged as a star for England and once again it was one of the occasions where he shone and won the game for his team. An innings of 102*, a wicket alongside his name and a match winning partnership with Eoin Morgan, Stokes did each and every job for his team to be the match winner for his side. A ranking of five on five is best suited for such a player possessing a plethora of talent.

Jos Buttler 4/5 –

After the dismissal of Morgan, there was a fear whether the game would tilt in Australia’s favour or not and no was the answer to it, thanks to Jos Buttler, who stood there at a crucial time, playing an innings of 29*, sharing the ultimate match winning partnership with Ben Stokes.

Moeen Ali 2/5 –

He didn’t have too much role in the game, as he didn’t bat. He bowled only five overs in which he gave away 24 runs and went wicketless.

Adil Rashid 5/5 –

Rashid showed that it’s important for a team to have a genuine spinner in the side, as he took four wickets at crucial junctures to not let Australia go past a big score. He didn’ let the tail to score big, which could have been the case keeping in mind the number of overs left. Rashid was the match winner for his side with the ball.

Liam Plunkett 2/5 –

Plunkett didn’t have much role in the game either. His bowling figures were 8-0-49-0.

Mark Wood 5/5 –

Wood scalped big and crucial wickets to dent the start of the Australian team and when they looked like making a comeback, he again dent the opposition. Wood showed his worth with the ball and ensured timely wickets for his team, to keep Australia under check and on a low score.

Jake Ball 1/5 –

Jake Ball didn’t have a great day out too. He gave away 61 runs in nine over in the game and went wicketless.
