2017 ICC Champions Trophy – England Vs New Zealand – New Zealand’s Predicted XI

Against the backdrop of the sunshine and the picturesque Sophia Gardens at Cardiff, England and New Zealand promise to churn out a thriller when the two teams clash for their Group A clash.

Since the last couple of years, both these teams have been among the most impressive ODI outfits with not just great numbers, but even a fine fearless brand of cricket associated to them. Their playing attributes are quite similar, as both teams rely mainly on their explosive top order for the batting, and their seamers for decimating the opposition.

When these giants previous clashed in 2015 during the five-match ODI series in England, all batting records for a bilateral series were shattered, as scores of 350 were a regular sight. If they can manage to replicate the same efforts from a couple of years ago, Cardiff should be a host to another spectacular match of ODI cricket.

Going into the game, however, New Zealand will be the more concerned outfit, after they missed out on a win against Australia with nature intervening. In the context of a challenging tournament, that one extra point could be absolutely crucial. Thereby, the Blackcaps would be itching to play their A game at the Sophia Gardens.

Recent form:

New Zealand played their tournament opener against arch rivals Australia and was on top of the game for a majority of the portion. Needing a steep target, Australia were rocked early when three quick top-order wickets derailed their run chase. In what seemed a certain New Zealand victory, things took a turn when the skies opened up and the game had to be sadly abandoned, leading to the points being shared.

Talking Points:

One major aspect of concern for New Zealand would be the form of the middle order. Against Australia, they seemed well set to get to anywhere around 330 at least. However, a magnanimous collapse against Josh Hazlewood saw the Kiwis were all out for 291 and after skipper Williamson’s wicket, none of the batsmen dug in. That would have to rectify against England surely.

From the bowling front, there are no real issues as the Pacers chipped in with frequent wickets against Australia. The ten overs from Jimmy Neesham and Corey Anderson, however, are yet untested and against an aggressive batting unit like England, these 10 overs would be absolutely critical.

New Zealand Predicted XI:

  1. Martin Guptill 2. Luke Ronchi (wk) 3. Kane Williamson(c) 4. Ross Taylor 5. Neil Broom 6. Corey Anderson 7. Jimmy Neesham 8. Mitchell Santner 9. Tim Southee 10. Adam Milne 11. Trent Boult
