2017 ICC Champions Trophy: Eoin Morgan Indicates Dropping Jason Roy For Jonny Bairstow

England skipper Eoin Morgan had indicated that he might cut down the extended rope given to opener Jason Roy, who has just managed a total of 31 runs in last six innings, starting from ODI series against South Africa,

“There’s a chance that we could make a change. Obviously, we don’t announce the team until the toss – but there’s a chance there could be a change. I mentioned after the last game that we’re getting to the business end of the tournament and we need to produce results, so it’s important that we get what we feel is our best XI to win the tournament out tomorrow in order to win the game,” said Morgan a day of the semi-final against Pakistan.

Roy has been under scanner since the series against England but team management continued to back him despite a string of poor scores. Meanwhile, Jonny Bairstow made his way in the team for just one ODI against South Africa last month at Lord’s where he played an innings of 51. Despite this, he has not given even a single chance in the ICC tournament so far. Roy’s continues poor form meant that now he might get replaced in favour of Jonny Bairstow, who could be asked to open the innings along with Alex Hales,

“Jonny’s qualities are that he’s a fantastic batsman. I think his best attribute, certainly in white-ball cricket over the last year and a half, has been his relentless attitude to score runs regardless of the situation. When you have guys sitting on the sidelines they can get a little bit upset and that can affect their performance when the actual chance comes along, but that doesn’t seem to affect Jonny. I’d have no worries if he has to open the batting. I certainly believe we’re in a good position at the moment as a batting unit and if Jonny does get the opportunity, I’m sure he’ll take it with both hands,” the skipper added.

However, Bairstow, who the second highest run-scorer in Test cricket in 2016, might find it difficult to come and straightaway open the innings as he has never ever opened the innings 22 ODI innings. He has batted at number three only once, an occasion which came earlier this year in Kolkata ODI against India on January 22. It would be unfair for Bairstow to ask him to do the toughest job, the reason why Morgan did not confirm dropping Roy as he might ponder over his decision after looking at the pitch for the game. All the other departments look settled and no change is required in any other department.

The first semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy will be played on June 14 between England and Pakistan at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff.
