2017 ICC Champions Trophy: India v New Zealand 1st Warm Up Game – Four Takeaways

The Indian cricket team registered a comfortable win over New Zealand in the first practice game of the ICC Champions Trophy. The win was much sweeter with the key players standing up for the team, especially Virat Kohli; as his form in the tournament will determine how far the Indian team will go in the tournament.

Along with that, the bowling line-up also clicked at the right team, which wrote a script of Indian team winning the first practice game against Kiwis.

There were many takeaways for the defending champions from the win they registered.

Here are few positives which the team would like to carry going into the next game against Bangladesh before kicking off their Champions Trophy tourney:

Mohammed Shami shines with white ball – It was a nervous moment for Mohammed Shami as he was making a comeback in the coloured jersey after a period of two years. Though he has played 10 Test matches in past one year but stayed away from white ball cricket. It was a test for him to emulate his performance in limited-overs cricket as well.

The speedster grabbed three big wickets in form of Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson and Neil Broom to prove his forte in this format as well. Shami’s show was enough to tell that he is all set to go in the big tournament as the spearhead of India pace line-up.

Ravindra Jadeja – an ace spinner – The highest wicket taker of the last edition of ICC Champions Trophy  – Ravindra Jadeja – was the star for Indian team yesterday as he did not just take wickets in the four overs he bowled but also bamboozled batsmen with his spin. His first wicket was Luke Ronchi, the only man from New Zealand side to cross 50-run mark. The way in which he bowled him was something out of the box as Ronchi failed to judge the line and was bowled.

The opposite happened with Colin de Granchdomme as he failed to judge the length of Jadeja’s delivery and got stumped. Jadeja bowled four tight overs and was the star of the team.

Dhawan strikes form – Ahead of the selection of the Indian squad for the Champions Trophy, there were doubts whether Dhawan will get a go in the ICC tournament or not but his past performance worked in his favour and he found himself on the flight to London.

The onus was on the left-handed batsman not just to prove himself but also present a case ahead of Ajinkya Rahane and this time, he did nothing wrong as Dhawan played brilliant innings of 40 and also shared a match-winning partnership of 68 with skipper Virat Kohli. Never during the innings, it seemed like he is out of touch. Whether you talk of drives or defence, every shot from his bat was showing that he is in form and ready to go in the tournament

Kohli gets Midas touch back – Just like Dhawan, there were questions over the form of Virat Kohli as well. Why not? The morale of the Indian skipper was down as he had no words to say regarding the performance of the team in IPL. In addition to it, his batting in the tournament was also not up to the mark.

Yesterday, the moment he donned the national jersey, the Indian skipper was the best man for the team. He played neat innings of 52* and put India on brink of a win before rain interrupted. His show was enough to hand India a win when the result was announced via D/L method.
