2017 ICC Champions Trophy: India v South Africa – South Africa’s Predicted XI

Two sides, with bruised confidence, will try to eliminate each other on Sunday at the KIA Oval, London. Almost everyone just plainly assumed India and South Africa will advance easily to the semi – finals from Group B. The two respective sides started well and kept the promises early on. But, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, whom everyone thought as the unfortunate ones, added a tangy twist to the fortunes.

South Africa thumped Sri Lanka while India got better of their traditional rivals Pakistan in their respective tournament openers. The path seemed clear for the top ranked sides in the world. But, multi nation tournaments, that too with a knock out based format, never cease to throw up surprises.

The popular prediction has now been tossed away and the current scenario is such that only one out of the two so-called favourites – India and South Africa – will head to the semi-finals. The winner will advance ahead while the loser will take the long flight back home.

Talking Points:

The match at The Oval is a winner takes all affair. So, naturally, it will be an intense, high pressure game. And, as cricketing history tell us, South Africa are not the best performers under such requirements. The most suitable term for them would be of ‘overbaked cookies’ as the English say.

Why, so? Those cookies look ugly, crumble quickly and a cause great dissatisfaction overall.

Not intending to demean the Proteas but the biggest talking point about them is whether they would be able to handle the tension or will they crumble down like cookies. Defending champions India, despite their unbelievable loss to Sri Lanka, has proved that they know nothing called the ‘burden of expectation,’ at least under current circumstances. The ease with which they side-lined Pakistan at Birmingham speaks for it.

It is also not tough to guess that Virat Kohlli, under normal a situation, will go for a bat first decision. Their approach has been pretty straightforward. Get a stable start, stretch the score past 300 for bowlers to defend.

South Africa, if luck favors them during the toss, should adopt the same approach. Bat first and defend. The weather looks fine so it’s an added benefit for them in case they are out to chase, as there would be no DLS method haunting them.

Win/Loss (Most recent first):

India: L, W, L, W, W
South Africa: L, W, W, L, L

Recent Form:

South Africa does not carry a decent record into the game. Their bowling department has been good but there are many chinks in their batting. Opener Quinton de Kock and captain AB de Villiers, two pillars of their batting, haven’t done anything special. The team needs them to click. Their failures have come in a wrong time and has been a cause of worry.

What’s more bothersome is that the middle order too has been blowing hot and cold. Which leaves no case for any resurrection when batting if the top order suffers a collapse. The likes of JP Duminy, Wayne Parnell, and Chris Morris, all reputed match winners in both the departments, have done very little for appreciation.

Predicted XI:

It’s difficult to predict if AB de Villiers would opt for changes or not given the importance of the match. But, Dwaine Pretorius should get a look in as a Wayne Parnell replacement. India hasn’t faced him yet and he has shown the knack of taking wickets in the handful of appearances he has made for South Africa since making his debut last year.

Here is the XI: Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock, Faf du Plessis, AB de Villiers, David Miller, JP Duminy, Chris Morris, Wayne Parnell, Kagiso Rabada, Morne Morkel, Imran Tahir.
