ICC Champions Trophy is the second most popular tournament in the ODI format, after the ICC World Cup. The 2017 ICC Champions Trophy is the 8th edition of the tournament, which will begin on 1st June and it will run until the 18th June.
Besides the host nation England, other 7 top-ranked teams in the ICC ODI Rankings as on 30th September 2015, are qualified for this tournament. Apart from the hosts, the other 7 teams in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy are Australia, India, South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan. India will begin this tournament as the defending champion.
In the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, eight teams are divided into two groups where four teams are seeded in the each group. England, Australia, Bangladesh and New Zealand are seeded in the Group A while India, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka are seeded in the Group B.
Each team will play once against the every other team in their group. In the every group match of this tournament, a winning team will earn two points while a losing team will get no points. In the case of a Tied match or a No result match, both the participating teams will be awarded one point each.
At the end of the group stage, the top two teams in the points table from the each group will qualify for the semifinals. In the case of two or more teams being on equal points in the same group, the team who will earn a better net run-rate stands to gain the higher place on the points table.
In semifinals, the first placed team of Group A will meet the second placed team of Group B; while on the other hand, the first placed team of Group B will take on the second placed team of Group A. The winners of the both semifinals will meet in the final of the tournament, which will be played on 18th June 2017 at The Oval (London). The winner of the final will be called the champion of the tournament and the team will be awarded the trophy.
