2017 ICC Champions Trophy: Match Stats – India vs Pakistan

In the very frustrating rain-interruption encounter between India and Pakistan at Edgbaston (Birmingham) in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, Indian team registered a big victory by winning by 124 runs. Pakistan decided to bowl first after winning the toss.

Despite several rain interruptions, India put a big total of 319/3 at the end of 48 overs. However, according to the D/L method, Pakistan needed a total of 324 runs in 48 overs.

The rain once again interrupted in the middle of Pakistan’s innings, as their final revised target was 289 runs in 41 overs. At the end, Pakistan was bowled out for just 164 runs (33.4 overs) while their last batsman Wahab Riaz was not able to bat due to an injury he suffered while bowling in the first innings.

India won this match by 124 runs (D/L method).

  1. Indian batsman Rohit Sharma batted very well but unfortunately, he missed out on a well-deserved century, as he was run out on 91 runs. Rohit became the second Indian batsman to dismiss in nervous nineties in the ICC Champions Trophy history. The first Indian batsman was Sourav Ganguly who was dismissed on 90 runs against Kenya at Southampton on 11th September 2004.

Also, Rohit Sharma became the second batsman to get run out in nervous nineties in the ICC Champions Trophy history. The first ever batsman was Adam Gilchrist (Australia) who had been run out on 92 runs against West Indies at Mumbai (Brabourne Stadium) on 18th October 2006.

 

  1. Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh played a superb stormy knock of 53 runs in just 32 balls. Yuvraj completed his half-century in just 29 balls, which is the fastest half-century by an Indian batsman in the ICC Champions Trophy history.

In overall, it was the 5th fastest half-century in the ICC Champions Trophy history.

 

  1. Indian skipper Virat Kohli also played a great knock off an unbeaten 81 runs. It is the highest individual knock by any skipper in an ICC event match between India and Pakistan. The previous record holder was former Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq with a 76 runs innings at Adelaide in the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup (on 15th February 2015).

 

  1. India scored 319/3 at the end of 48 overs. Here are some important stats of this innings:

i) It is the second highest total for India in their ICC Champions Trophy history. Their record total in this tournament history is 331/7 (50 overs) against South Africa at Cardiff on 6th June 2013.

ii) It is the highest total for any team against Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy history. The previous record holder was West Indies with 289/9 (50 overs) at Dhaka on 29th October 1998.

iii) It is the second highest ODI total for India against Pakistan at the neutral venues. India’s highest ODI total against Pakistan at the neutral venues is 330 runs which have been scored twice (330/8 in 50 overs at Dhaka on 10th June 2008 and 330/4 in 47.5 overs at Dhaka on 18th March 2012).

iv) Also, it is the highest total for any team in an ICC event match between India and Pakistan. The previous record holder was Pakistan with 302/9 (50 overs) at Centurion on 26th September 2009.

 

  1. During India’s innings, four batsmen scored 50+ runs each (Rohit Sharma 91, Shikhar Dhawan 68, Virat Kohli 81* and Yuvraj Singh 53). It is the first time in the ICC Champions Trophy history where more than three batsmen have scored 50+ runs each in an innings.

 

  1. Pakistan left-arm pacer Wahab Riaz was very expensive in this match, as his final bowling figure was 8.4-0-87-0. It is most expensive bowling by any bowler in the ICC Champions Trophy history. The previous record holder was Tinashe Panyangara (Zimbabwe) with the bowling figure of 10-0-86-1 against England at Birmingham on 10th September 2004.

 

  1. Pakistan was nine out for just 164 runs (33.4 overs). It is the lowest completed total for any team in an ICC event match between India and Pakistan. The previous lowest was 165 runs (39.4 overs) which were also scored by Pakistan at Birmingham on 15th June 2013.

 

  1. India won this match by 124 runs through the D/L method. It is India’s largest victory (by runs) in their ICC Champions Trophy history. The previous largest victory (by runs) for India in this tournament history was by 98 runs against Kenya at Southampton on 11th September 2004.

Also, it is India’s second-largest ODI victory (by runs) against Pakistan. India’s largest ODI victory (by runs) against Pakistan is by 140 runs at Dhaka on 10th June 2008.

 

  1. On the other hand, Pakistan lost this game by 124 runs (D/L method). It is their joint largest defeat (by runs) in their ICC Champions Trophy history. Earlier once, Pakistan had also lost against South Africa by 124 runs at Mohali on 27th October 2006.
