2017 ICC Champions Trophy: South Africa Ready To Bench Morne Morkel For All-Rounders: Russell Domingo

Despite being the most experienced bowler in the South African line-up in absence of Dale Steyn, the place of Morne Morkel isn’t fixed in the ODI side, as the team management is ready to bench Morkel in place of an all-rounder, coach Russell Domingo said.

Morkel, who was playing his first ODI since his comeback to ODI cricket after a period of one year, though impressed Domingo but Morkel might not find himself in the side, due to the fact that the team is looking to widen its all round department, as they have classic fast bowlers in form of Kagiso Rabada and Wayne Parnell right at the start,

“It’s a catch-22 situation because having Morne there might strengthen our bowling, it gives us more of a tail not having the three allrounders,” Domingo said. “It’s his first one-day international for a while and it’s good to have him back. He’s had a long-term injury layoff, and the bowlers that have played in his place have done really well,” he added.

Morkel had to wait for the dead rubber to make a comeback to the ODI side, as he was not a part of the playing XI in the first two One-Dayers. Though he bowled well, but it was Kagiso Rabada who stole the limit as he crushed England to 20/6 in the first five overs.

Domingo further praised England’s batting line-up, riding on which the side was able to win the first two matches of the series to seal the series,

“That’s the way England bat at times – if there is something in the wicket, and you land the ball in the right areas and they nick the ball, you’ve got a chance against them because they play that expansive brand of cricket. On flatter wickets, they’re going to be a hell of a dangerous,” he said. “But the bowlers will always have a chance against them when there’s something in the wicket because of the way they’re going about their batting at the moment.”

South Africa will open its Champions Trophy campaign on June 3 with the first game against Sri Lanka. They will face Pakistan on June 7 before taking on defending champions India in their final league stage game on June 11.
