2017 ICC Champions Trophy – South Africa Vs Sri Lanka – Sri Lanka’s Player Ratings

Sri Lanka’s campaign for the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy began on a disastrous note, as the side simply capitulated against South Africa in a moderate run chase needing 300 runs as the target. Skipper Upul Tharanga gave his all with a valiant half-century but that was never going to be enough unless someone else from the side stood up with a decent show with the bat.

Earlier in the day, Hashim Amla made it a memorable outing with the 25th ODI ton of his career. It was a great knock filled with patience and class throughout. For Sri Lanka, things look extremely tough now and below, are the player ratings for the side against South Africa.

  1. Niroshan Dickwella – 3/5:

The flamboyant opener got off to a solid start playing an array of eye-catching strokes. He began by attacking Kagiso Rabada and Wayne Parnell from the beginning and looked quite entertaining. Just when he should have made his start count, he was dismissed for 41 off 33 deliveries. Had Dickwella been around for a little longer, Sri Lanka could have got closer to the target.

  1. Upul Tharanga – 3.5/5:

The Sri Lankan captain played a lone warrior knock, as he didn’t find adequate support at the other end. Despite losing wickets frequently, Tharanga held his ground and looked very good in the middle. After getting to his half-century, Tharanga was foxed by the class of Imran Tahir and made his way back for 57. Fair to say, Tharanga lacked the support of his partners to a great extent.

3. Kusal Mendis – 1/5:

Before the tournament commenced, Mendis was being touted as Sri Lanka’s batsman to watch out for on the basis of the serious batting talent in his arsenal. In the game against South Africa though, all that promise vanished into thin air, as he was caught spectacularly by AB de Villiers for just 11.

When he came out to bat, the run rate was well over six, and he should have got in and played a real big one and not wasted the start from the openers.

  1. Dinesh Chandimal – 0.5/5:

Dinesh Chandimal is slowly turning out to be the Umar Akmal of Sri Lanka in terms of wasting all his talent. Being the senior member of the outfit now, Chandimal was expected to bat through the innings and guide the chase. But a sluggish knock of 12 off 21 deliveries did the opposite and sucked all the momentum in before he was run out by de Villiers.

  1. Chamara Kapugedara – 0/5:

Another experienced member of this outfit, who terribly disappointed was Kapugedara. With Sri Lanka losing the plot in the middle overs, the batsman was a victim of some genius of Imran Tahir, as the leg-spinner trapped him plumb in front which was a straight-forward call for the umpire.

  1. Kusal Perera – 2.5/5:

Perera’s place for this game was under the scanner, but despite the thrashing, he did enough to be picked for the next game. Honestly, Perera himself did well and gave his best but didn’t find any support from the lower order. Personally, though it was a decent outing for Perera in the middle order against a good bowling attack.

  1. Asela Gunaratne – 1/5:

Perceived as someone who could possibly do the role of Angelo Mathews in his absence, Gunaratne disappointed to a great extent. With the ball, he was taken apart for 64 in 10 overs without taking a wicket. With the bat as well, he was below par, as he was dismissed for four by Imran Tahir. Being a finisher, Gunaratne will have to step up for the next couple of games.

  1. Sekhuge Prasanna – 1.5/5:

Sri Lanka’s only spinner in this game, Prasanna was extremely below par, as he was hammered by the South African batsmen for 72 runs in his quota of 10 overs. The leggie though took the wicket of South Africa’s captain AB de Villiers in his spell. With the bat, he was trapped in front for 13 by Chris Morris.

Suranga Lakmal
  1. Suranga Lakmal – 2.5/5:

Picked ahead of the veteran Nuwan Kulasekara, Lakmal didn’t quite live up to the expectations with the ball. Despite initially keeping things tight with the new ball, Lakmal conceded the odd boundary and in all, gave away 51 runs in 10 overs, while picking up the solitary wicket of David Miller.

  1. Nuwan Pradeep – 3/5:

Among the rare members of this outfit who impressed, was pacer Nuwan Pradeep, who ended up bowling quite well to a dangerous batting lineup. Being introduced as the first change, Pradeep wasn’t just economical, but also picked up two crucial wickets in his quota of 10 overs. Fair to say, he has done enough to retain his place for the next game.

Mathews to replace Malinga as captain

  1. Lasith Malinga – 1/5:

Making his return to the format for the first time since November 2015, Lasith Malinga endured a poor outing in his comeback match. Bowling with the new ball, Malinga did manage to keep things tight against De Kock and Amla, but then he failed to take a wicket, which was his primary job. Bowling well at the death, Malinga wasn’t among the wickets but was economical.
