2017 ICC Champions Trophy: Sri Lanka Vs South Africa – Five Talking Points

With the convincing 96 runs win over Sri Lanka, the World No. 1 ranked team South Africa has claimed its ninth win out of their last 10 One-day Internationals against the Lions which further shows how dominant the Proteas have been against Lankans, who struggled after a rollicking start on Saturday in their opening fixture of the eight edition of ICC Champions Trophy.

Sri Lanka was bundled out for 203 in 41.3 overs which further saw Kusal Perera remained unbeaten on 44 off 66 balls.

However, the hero against England at Lord’s and ranked No. 1 bowler Kagiso Rabada claimed a wicket of Lasith Malinga after conceding 46 runs, as he dropped as many as two catches on his own bowling.

Let’s have a look at the five points of the day:

Hashim Amla’s Hundred:

Hashim Amla has been an impactful player for South Africa while playing some significant innings to lead the formidable side from the front whenever they were struggling.

Showing his class again with the bat, Amla went on to register his 25th hundred in his 154th ODI, as he flayed the Sri Lankan’s bowling line-up during the third match of the ongoing 2017 ICC Champions at The Oval.

While showing his dominance, has a liking for keeping the scoreboard ticking, as it becomes pretty clear with his scoring chart.

The elegant stroke-maker collected 54 singles, followed by seven doubles and a solitary triple run, as he further boosted his innings with five boundaries and two sixes.

Acrobatic AB De Villiers:

The man, who is known for his pyrotechnics after failing to deliver with the bat made a sensational effort by running experienced campaigner Dinesh Chandimal out with his brilliant one-handed pick after movingly swiftly to his right in the extra cover region to hit the bull’s eye at the bowler’s end.

In 12th over, on the bowling of Chris Morris, AB de Villiers jumped to perfection while outstretching his arms at the short mid-wicket region to claim a brilliant catch of Kushal Mendis.

Imran Tahir Nemesis For Sri Lanka; 4 for 27:

The World No. 2 ranked leg-spinner Imran Tahir, has been a revelation with the ball and he made things quite difficult for Sri Lanka in the recent past and in particular third match of the ongoing Champions Trophy and first of the Group B clash was no different.

In his 8.3 overs, the Lahore-born Imran Tahir claimed three wickets after conceding 27 runs at the economy rate of 3.17.

The 38-year-old spinner dismissed stand-in skipper Upul Tharanga on 57 when David Miller completed a simple catch in the deep after trapping Chamara Kapugedara in front of the wickets on nought.

Dangerous Asela Gunaratne was also bagged by Tahir after Wayne Parnell completed a catch which saw latter scoring just four off 13 deliveries.

Imran Tahir, who has been working hard one season after another, has a knack of picking wickets on non-spinning tracks which further makes him a potent weapon for a skipper. Interestingly, the spinner has bagged 23 wickets in 10 matches now against Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan Opening Stand:

Sri Lanka had a bright start in a bid to chase down the target of 300, as their openers went on to post 69, in hurry in 8.2 overs, but the rest of the batsmen couldn’t make anything out of the momentum set by the left-handed combination early on.

Niroshan Dickewella scored 41 off 36 balls, as Upul Tharanga was batting on 18 off 19 balls when first blood was drawn by the Proteas.

The left-handed batsman and most experienced campaigner in the Sri Lankan side, Upul Tharanga was the top scorer for his side after smashing 57 off 68 balls.

The 32-year-old Tharanga’s innings was laced with six boundaries while trying hard to save one end before perishing on the bowling of Imran Tahir. Tharanga registered 25 singles followed and four doubles.

However, in 17th over, Lasith Malinga made a mess at the long leg boundary while brushing off with the padded-up boundaries, as he stepped backwards while trying to settle himself under the ball. Faf du Plessis went for the pull before top edge went through Malinga’s fingers – to see latter completing a couple and there on, du Plessis scored crucial 75 runs off 70 balls.
