2017 ICC Champions Trophy – Top Five Teams With Most Number of Matches

Experts have opined that winning the ICC Champions Trophy requires far greater skills and capabilities than the ICC World Cup.

With only the best of the sides competing in a compressed format, there is no room for getting laid back or being complacent, as one error, could potentially end a team’s campaign.

Such is the level of dedication, hard work and determination needed, to succeed in cricket’s most rigorously competed tournament.

Having made its debut in 1998, the ICC Champions Trophy has come off a long way with several players turning into legends with this prestigious tournament. The previous edition was supposed to be the last one in 2013, which the then MS Dhoni-led India won with authority, but an enhanced global demand has led the ICC to reinstate the tournament among the other ICC events.

Scheduled to be held in every four years, fans are assured of some serious cricketing action over the duration.

A few teams have garnered tremendous success in this tournament over repeated editions. Keeping that in mind, below, we have a look at the top five teams with the most number of matches in the ICC Champions Trophy. It must be noted that teams have been arranged in an ascending order, in terms of the matches played and win percentage.

South Africa in ICC Champions Trophy 2013
  1. South Africa – 21 matches:

The winners of the inaugural edition in 1998, RSA has played 21 matches in this event and stand at the fifth position. As a team, the Proteas have achieved decent success in the ICC Champions Trophy and have always done well.

The rainbow nation even hosted the 2009 edition after Pakistan was stripped off its rights in 2008. Making it to the semi-finals in 2000, 2002, 2006 and 2013, the Proteas haven’t quite capitalised on their starts.

Considering their form this time around, the AB de Villiers-led side is easily among the favourites and are currently the number one ranked team in the ICC ODI Team Rankings.

  1. Australia – 21 matches:

The Kangaroos got off to a very slow start in this ICC event but took off for good in the mid-2000’s, as they won the successive editions in 2006 and 2009, in India and South Africa, respectively.

On both occasions, it was under the leadership of Ricky Ponting which drove Australia to glory. In 21 games, the Aussies have won 12 encounters but were winless in the previous edition of 2013.

The last edition was an embarrassment for the Kangaroos, as the side failed to win even a single game. With Steven Smith now at the helm of affairs, this present Aussie outfit looks far more competent and championship worthy.

  1. West Indies – 24 matches:

Despite their dismal record in bilateral ties over the last decade, West Indies have somehow managed to surprise everyone with their performances in the ICC Champions Trophy.

The winners of the 2004 edition in England, have enjoyed decent success in this particular tournament having played a total of 24 games. Their performances have always revolved around the destructive displays of opener Chris Gayle, who remains among the top run-getters in the competition.

As ironic as it may sound, the winners of 2004, runners-up of 1998 and 2006, won’t even play in this edition, as they failed to make it to the top eight teams during the cut-off date. That brings about an absolute low for the poorly managed West Indies Cricket Board.

  1. Sri Lanka – 24 games:

Despite having just one shared trophy to their name in 2002 with India when they hosted the event, Sri Lanka has been a really consistent side in the elite event.

Sri Lanka’s 24 games have involved 13 victories and in all these events, the side went into the tournament on the back of some serious experience. This time, however, the side is terribly short of muscle and experience, as all the senior pros such as Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara have bid adieu to the game.

Termed as the underdogs, Sri Lanka would be eager to make it to the next round this time around.

  1. India – 24 games:

By far the most successful side in the ICC Champions Trophy has been India, as the men in blue have played 24 games.

A stupendous tally of 15 wins has been recorded in these 24 games making it the highest win percentage. Under the leadership of Sourav Ganguly, the side ended up as the runners-up in 2000, shared winners in 2002 and under MS Dhoni, the winners of the previous edition in 2013 in England.

India didn’t lose even a single game in 2013 and played an extremely ruthless brand of cricket. Now with Virat Kohli at the helm of affairs, and the experience of MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh in the middle, India are among the tournament favourites.
