The Background:
Indian women’s team opener Smriti Mandhana has become the talk of the town for her two exceptional knocks in the first two games of the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup.
If her sizzling knock of 90 off 72 balls in the first game against hosts England was good then her unbeaten knock in the second game against West Indies was even better. What makes her innings against the reigning World T20 champions special are the tough circumstances under which it came unlike the one against England which came when India was batting first.
Chasing a modest 183, India was in trouble after being reduced to 33 for two. However, Mandhana along with skipper Mithali Raj bailed India out of trouble by adding 108 runs for the third wicket. And although Mithali missed her eighth consecutive half-century by just four runs, Mandhana made amends for missing out on a hundred against England with a scintillating unbeaten 106, guiding India to a comfortable seven-wicket victory with more than seven overs remaining.

India Prove Their Title-Credentials:
With the likes of Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur in their ranks, India boasts of a very balanced side which is a fine blend of youth and experience. And the ladies have sent out a statement of intent with two thumping wins over the formidable England and World T20 champions West Indies.
But it seems a journalist still doubts India’s title-credentials and Mandhana has got the perfect reply for that person. The incident occurred when the 20-year old batswoman was attending the post-match conference. During that session, one journalist asked her whether India can go all the way to win the tournament.
In reply, a surprised Mandhana shut the journalist down by saying: “What? You don’t?”
Well, the reply was as perfect as her batting and we hope that the team goes all the way to prove their detractors wrong. Mandhana further expressed her desire of guiding India to the World Cup glory.
“I haven’t worked really hard for the last five months to get fit just for a 90 or a hundred. I want to do well for India and win the World Cup for India. That’s what I’ve been craving for the last five months,” said the 20-year old had battled her way into the tournament while recovering from a torn meniscus and ACL in her left knee.
