2017 Records: Most Runs Conceded By A Bowler In An ODI

2017 Records: Most Runs Conceded by a Bowler in an ODI: As 2017 draws to an end, the only further excitement lies in store for fans across the globe. With some high profile bilateral series’ lined up in the near future, a lot is at stake for all the teams out there.

ODI’s in 2017 were a somewhat entertaining affair, as the primary ICC event this year, the ICC Champions Trophy in England was a thrilling episode. The ever-mercurial men in green Pakistan, stunned, shocked and surprised one and all with their skills, as the Sarfaraz Ahmed-led side went on to win the tournament by beating India in the finals.

Beyond the ICC Champions Trophy as well, there was a lot to note from the ODI front. The usual suspects in India, Australia, England and South Africa were superb characteristically, as the heavyweights churned out some memorable performances.

Nevertheless, there were some forgettable outings for the bowlers this year as well, and with the willow having the upper hand over the ball, it isn’t surprising to find bowlers having paltry numbers to their credit.

In the statistical piece below, we have a look at the five most expensive spells in ODI cricket bowled this year, in the ascending order.

  1. Bhuvneshwar Kumar – 10 overs – 92 – 1

2017 was a breakthrough year for Bhuvneshwar Kumar, as the Uttar Pradesh pacer emerged as India’s bowling spearhead in the ODI cricket.

Along with the slingy Jasprit Bumrah, Kumar has formed an incredibly lethal bowling partnership and be it with the new ball or at the death,; the two have played a key role in India’s dominance in the format. As a whole, 2017 has been an excellent year for Kumar, who even registered his maiden five-wicket haul in Tests against Sri Lanka.

However, the ever-reliable pacer endured an off day against New Zealand in the series decider recently in Kanpur.

Bowling at his home ground and having the cushion of a target of more than 330, Kumar got plundered for 92 in his spell of 10 overs. Even though his figures seem terrible, they don’t reflect the real story, as Kumar came back fiercely in his last couple of overs to strangle New Zealand and seal the series for India.

  1. Peter Chase – 10 overs – 92 – 1

The 24-year old Irish pacer was taken for plenty against Afghanistan when the two sides met in 2017 in the latter team’s adopted home stadium in Greater Noida, India.

With Afghan keeper Mohammad Shehzad coming out all guns blazing, the young Peter Chase ran short of ideas, as the air of international cricket welcomed him not so smoothly. The game though turned out to be a high scoring affair, as Afghanistan’s score of 338 was met with a solid response from Ireland’s top-order.

Nevertheless, the visitors fell short, as their innings came to a close on 304, with precisely 15 balls remaining in the innings.

  1. Jake Ball – 10 overs – 94 – 1

Having made his ODI debut against Bangladesh late in 2016, Ball’s entry into ODI cricket hasn’t been a smooth ride so far.

Despite being among the wickets for his team in 2017, the towering pacer remains immensely inconsistent and sprays his lines all over the surface. With an economy rate of 6.25 and an average of 42.52 after 16 games, one can make out that the 26-year old needs to improve a big time for England to excel further.

Ball endured a disastrous outing in 2017 against the Windies in the fifth and final ODI of the series at Southampton, as the Calypso Kings tore him apart. With the Windies posting 288 in their 50 overs, 94 of those were sourced from the bowling of Jake Ball, as the top-order, in particular, took a liking for the pacer.

  1. Richard Ngarava – 10 overs – 96 – 1

Pretty much like the case of Peter Chase, the teenaged left-arm pacer Richard Ngarava of Zimbabwe too had the bear the brunt of the brutalities of ODI cricket into the initial days of his ODI career.

In an ODI against Scotland in Edinburg in June, the 19-year old was hammered for 96 in his spell of 10 overs, as the hosts took a liking for the rookie. Termed as a talent to watch out for in the Zimbabwean cricket circles, Ngarava can surely take this outing as a lesson and improve in the near future.

  1. Hasan Ali – 9 overs – 100 – 2

You would be in for the shock of your life on realising that the person heading this dubious list is undoubtedly the pacer of 2017, Hasan Ali.

Ali single-handedly injected life into Pakistan’s campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy with a fiery spell against South Africa. From there on, things just took off for the aggressive pacer as sheer pace, combined with energy and some reverse swing, turned out to be the ingredient which Pakistan needed to achieve glory.

The year though didn’t begin as planned for Hasan, as he was massacred Down Under in the final ODI of the series. With David Warner scoring a tremendous 179, Ali was on the receiving end of a vicious assault, as the Australians were on the offensive against the right-arm pacer.

Ali went on to touch the three-figure mark and wasn’t asked to bowl his final over. Nevertheless, the amends he made in the ICC Champions Trophy topple all the flaws!

Here is the list.

Bowler Team Overs Runs Wickets
Hasan Ali Pakistan 9 100 2
Richard Ngarava Zimbabwe 10 96 1
Jake Ball England 10 94 1
Peter Chase Ireland 10 92 1
Bhuvneshwar Kumar India 10 92 1
Liam Plunkett England 10 91 2
Wahab Riaz Pakistan 8.4 87 0
Junaid Khan Pakistan 10 82 0
Craig Young Ireland 10 82 2
Jake Ball England 10 82 1
