22-Year-Old Beaten To Death With Cricket Bat In Delhi

Not returning a cricket ball turned fatal for a 22-year old boy after he was beaten to death with a cricket bat by two minors in the aftermath of a heated argument in north Delhi’s Subzi Mandi area on Tuesday evening (June 27).

As per a report in The Hindustan Times, the city police have reported that the deceased identified as Angad Gupta was on his way to a relative’s house on foot when a ball accidentally struck him in the stomach. Angry with the incident, Angad asked the teenagers not to play the game in the lane and instead shift the match to a playground. However, instead of paying heed to Gupta’s advice, the teenagers got involved in a heated argument with him. The altercation began to take an ugly turn when Gupta slapped one of the boys but the situation was calmed down when the locals intervened and Gupta was let off.

“Gupta reportedly slapped one of the teenagers, which angered them and they pinned him down. They, however, let him go when locals intervened. Later, when the two teenagers found him taking a stroll outside in a lane they cornered him again,” a senior police officer was quoted as saying by the news outlet.

However, the accused once again picked up the fight with Gupta and this time it turned fatal, as they hit him on his head with a bat. The deceased collapsed at the spot which made the teenagers flee.

“They hit him with the bat on their head. They hit him twice and Gupta collapsed on the ground. He started bleeding from his mouth. The boys then fled from the spot,” a police officer said.

The locals soon gathered at the spot and called the police. Some also tried to chase the accused but they managed to escape. Gupta was then rushed to a local hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

“He sustained a head injury, which led to his instant death. We sent the body for postmortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death. We registered a FIR under sections of culpable homicide not amounting to murder,” a senior police officer said.

A senior police officer further said that the accused have been apprehended along with the murder weapon.

“They went into hiding but with the help of our local sources, we were able to apprehend them from Roshnara Bagh on Wednesday morning. The bat has also been seized,” the senior officer said. “The teens will be produced before the juvenile justice board.
