5 Bowlers Who Hold Startling Batting Records

Apart from a little cameo towards the end of the innings, nothing much is expected from bowlers when it comes to batting. However, the game has witnessed quite a few bowlers who kept a price on their wicket and some of them even went on to make a few world records with their willow.

5 Bowlers Who Hold Startling Batting Records

5. Ashton Agar (Australia)

Playing his debut Test match, a 19-year old Ashton Agar surprised everyone by playing one of the finest innings by a bowler. What makes the innings even more special is the fact that it came against their arch-rivals England, during the 2013 Ashes series. Coming in to bat at number eleven, the left-handed batsman went into record books by scoring 98 runs- the highest score by a number 11 batsman. When he came to bat, Australia were reeling at 117 for 9 but a 163 runs partnership with Phillip Hughes saw them scoring 280. The incredible knock came off just 101 deliveries and was studded with 12 fours and 2 maximums.

4. Shane Warne (Australia)

The legendary leg-spinner is more known for his bowling. However, few know that he also holds a batting record. Warne, who is the second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket,  holds the record for scoring the most number of runs in the longest format of the game without a century. However, that does not mean that he was not a capable batsman. Warne scored 3,154 runs in the 145 Tests he played. His highest Test score was 99, which he made against New Zealand in Perth in 2001.

3. Ajit Agarkar (India)

The former Indian bowler really took his batting seriously.  He stunned everyone by scoring a Test century at the Mecca of cricket, Lord’s. Agarkar, however, holds a special record with the willow. He owns the record of scoring the fastest fifty by an Indian in ODIs. Agarkar smashed a fifty off only 21 balls against Zimbabwe in an ODI in Rajkot in 2000. He had broken Kapil Dev’s record of 22 balls, which he achieved against West Indies in 1983. Despite the Indian batsmen dominating the record books, Agarkar’s feat has stood till date.

2. Jason Gillespie (Australia)

Night watchman’s role in cricket was limited to protecting the next recognised batsman for the next day’s play, rather than run the risk of losing another batsman on that same evening. But the former Australian pacer Jason Gillespie changed the definition of this role. Surely a handy customer with the bat, Gillespie made history when he scored an unbeaten 201 against Bangladesh in Chittagong in 2006. He still holds the record of scoring the most number of runs as a night watchman in Tests. It is also the only double-century scored by a night watchman in the history of Test match cricket. The right-handed batsman batted for 574 minutes and faced 425 balls during his monumental knock.

1.Wasim Akram (Pakistan)

The legendary Pakistani seamer Wasim Akram, who has 916 international wickets, wrote his name in the record book when he made a magnificent 257 against Zimbabwe in Sheikhpura in 1996. The monumental knock was studded with 12 sixes and it still is the highest number of sixes in a Test innings by any batsman. The score is also the highest score by any number 8 batsman in Tests. The match was drawn and one should credit Akram for his batting heroics.
