In Test cricket a bowler needs to pick up wickets as well as control the flow of runs which is difficult art. They have bowl long spells in day and need the ability to bowl different type of wickets around the world which needs a lot of practice.

Here we look at the top 5 current bowlers with best bowling averages in Test cricket:

1. Dale Steyn (South Africa)

Dale Steyn is one of the top fast bowlers in the world today in Test cricket. His best ability is to swing the ball and make the batsmen struggle for their runs. He has played 78 matches and has picked up 396 wickets with an average of 22.55 which is great for a fast bowler. He has picked 5 wickets in an innings 25 times and 10 wickets in a match 5 times. He made his Test debut on against England in 2004.

2. Vernon Philander (South Africa)

Vernon Philander is another top quality bowler who can bowl in any condition. His biggest strength is to bowl stump to stump and does not allow the batsmen to score runs with ease. He has played 29 Test matches and has picked 121 wickets with an average of 21.95. He has picked 5 wickets in an innings 9 times and 10 wickets in a match 2 times. He made his Test debut against Australia in 2011.

 3. Ryan Harris (Australia)

Ryan Harris was another top quality who retired from all forms of Test cricket yesterday. He did not have pace but his accuracy was his main strength.  He played 27 Test matches and had picked 113 wickets with an average of 23.52. He had picked 5 wickets in an innings 5 times and 10 wickets in a match zero times. He made his Test debut against New Zealand in 2010.

 4. James Anderson (England)

James Anderson is another top quality bowler who has done very well with his bowling. His biggest strength is to swing the ball and bowl accurate line, length. He has played 102 Test matches and has picked 403 wickets with an average of 29.42. He has picked 5 wickets in an innings 17 times and 10 wickets in a match 2 times. He made his Test debut against Zimbawawe in 2003.

5. Trent Boult (New Zealand) 

Trent Boult is another emerging fast bowler who can swing the ball and makes the life of batsmen tough. His biggest strength is to bowling stump to stump and does allow the batsmen to score runs easily. He has played 32 Test matches and has picked 123 wickets with an average of 27.12. He has picked 5 wickets in an innings 4 times and 10 wickets in a match only 1. He made his Test debut against Australia in 2011.
