5 grounds in India that have missed out on the IPL this season

The Indian Premier League has helped the growth of the sport in the country in more ways than one. The strength and opportunities it provides for the betterment of the domestic circuit in India is on the show every year at this time and it has only grown in stature over the years.

Though at times it has been marred by controversy, the number of advantages it provides to the sportsmen all across the country is high and this cannot be overlooked in the long term.

With many cities hosting the 8-team tournament, there are many other cities that are missing out on the gung-ho the tournament creates in the grounds. The authorities have taken a big step by instilling fan parks in various cities but the live atmosphere that the fans can enjoy in the ground is hard to replicate.

There are a number of cities with grounds good enough to host the IPL but many have missed out this season. However, with the High Court decision to shift the matches away from Maharashtra, there is every chance that they will host a few games before the end of the tournament.

Here are 5 such international stadiums that have missed out on the tournament this year:

  1. Brabourne Stadium (Mumbai):

Mumbai, a city with as many as three international cricket grounds will not be using the Brabourne stadium in this tournament. A recent controversy has seen games completely shifted out of the state of Maharashtra and this will leave the Brabourne stadium without a game this season in the IPL.

Just two years ago, it hosted the eliminator game between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings and the atmosphere on the night was just electric. However, the ground has found no takers this season and will miss out on the action all season long. This is one stadium the BCCI should make sure that it hosts a minimum number of games every year.

  1. MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chennai):

The home ground of the recently dismissed IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings, the MA Chidambaram Stadium has always been the hub of the sport in Tamil Nadu. Over the years, there have been unforgettable games in international cricket and the IPL at this venue but for the current season, with no franchise playing from the state, the stadium is not hosting a single game.

With a capacity of over 38,000, it is one of the most enjoyable grounds to play the sport in. Though the temperature and humidity at this time of the year do not help the players, the atmosphere in the ground has always helped the team in yellow in the tournament. Surely, with the venues still to be set for a number of games, the Chidambaram Stadium will have to host at least a couple of games.

  1. Sardar Patel Stadium (Ahmadabad):

Called as the ‘Motera Stadium’ locally, the Sardar Patel stadium is one of the biggest grounds in India. It has a current capacity of 54,000 and is expected to hold upto 1,00,000 spectators after its renovation. The Rajasthan Royals, who were suspended from the IPL used this ground to great effect in their title-winning season but with no franchise ready to take over, it is now going through some construction works.

It is a high scoring ground with 365 being the highest total in an international ODI game. It will have provided some superb moments had there been any games scheduled but with construction going on inside the ground, even a change in venues cannot see teams play in this ground this season.

  1. Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium (Dharamshala):

Recently been awarded a test status, the HPCA stadium in Himachal Pradesh is one of the most iconic stadiums in India. It is carved out in the middle of a mountain with picturesque mountains surrounding the ground. It is a great place to play the game but unfortunately has no games scheduled this season.

The Kings XI Punjab franchise usually plays a game or two at Dharamshala but this season, they have not listed the ground in their schedule and will play all their games at the PCA Stadium in Mohali. However, with some games still to be decided, the HPCA stadium might just get more than a couple of games to its name this IPL.

  1. Barabati Stadium (Cuttack):

A regular venue for international cricket in India, the Barabati stadium in Cuttack has astonishingly not been selected to host even a single IPL game this season. It has also hosted a couple of international T20 in the last two years and has also been used by the Punjab and Kolkata franchises as a home ground in that time.

But this season, it has found no place in the schedule of the tournament and will not be hosting any game. With many other venues also available for this year’s undecided IPL games, it will not be easy for this ground to snatch a game or two before the end of the tournament.
