IPL 2016: Five young Indian stars knocking the door of national team

The Indian selection committee will meet at the end of the month to select the team of Zimbabwe tour which will comprise of 3 One day Internationals and 3 T20 matches. With some seniors likely to be rested for the tour of Zimbabwe, it gives an oppurnity for young Indian stars who have impressed in the on-going IPL 9 season and domestic tournament to claim a stake in the national squad.

Here we look at the 5 IPL 9 young stars knocking the door of national team for Zimbabwe tour.

  1. Krunal Pandya

Krunal Pandya playing his first IPL season has impressed a lot in the tournament so far and on the top of the list seeking an opportunity. He has come out as an all-rounder contributing with the bat and off-spin bowler. He has made an impressive score of 233 runs in 11 matches at an average of 46.60 with a best score of 86 against Delhi Daredevils in the last match on 15 May 2016. His strike rate of 192.56 shows his hitting power. With the ball also he has shown promise by taking 6 wickets in 11 matches with an economy of 7.13, not bad for a spinner. His ability to hit big sixes and creating pressure on the bowlers makes him dangerous batsmen. He has also demonstrated to be a good fielder with safe hands for taking catches. For Zimbabwe tour he might replace Ravindra Jadeja as an all-rounder. Krunal Pandya plays with fearless attitude and like his brother Hardik Pandya who came to limelight in recent Australian tour and the world cup has big hitting abilities to clear the ropes with ease.  Both the siblings can make a good combination and motivate each other.

2. KL Rahul

KL Rahul, good solid test batsmen has been in excellent touch for Royal Challengers Bangalore this season. He has shown that batsmen with proper technique can survive in shorter formats also. In this year’s IPL so far he has played 9 matches and scored 332 runs at an average of 55.33. His best score in the tournament has been 68 not out against Mumbai Indians. KL Rahul has batted at top of order and also scored runs in the middle order. With the Zimbabwe tour in the radar KL Rahul could be brought in the squad for struggling Shikhar Dhawan to open the innings. It will be a good chance for KL Rahul to show his talent in shorter format. He could be a backup wicket-keeper in the team  .

3. Risbah Pant

Risbah Pant another young Indian talent under the guidance of Rahul Dravid, has impressed with his batting skills. Pant fetching 1.9 Crores INR, plays for Delhi Daredevils in IPL 9, He has played 7 matches so far and scored 161 runs with an average of 32.20. His best score so far was 69 against Gujarat Lions with a strike rate of 140.0. He has also played in recently concluded Under 19 World Cup held in Bangladesh where he scored the fastest half century. Risbah an explosive batsmen could replace Rohit Sharma with his power hitting as opening batsman as he has shown that he can play any fast bowler with ease.

4. Karun Nair

Karun Nair has impressed with his batting skills in this year’s IPL. In the 11 matches he has played so far, the Karnataka batsmen have made 222 runs. His best score in the tournament was 68 with 2 half centuries to his name. His average of 27.75 may not show his potential but the strike rate of 120.0 makes him a solid batsmen. He can rotate the strike very well and hit the big strokes at will.   In the Ranji Trophy his performance for Karnataka has been exceptional. He could be selected in place of Suresh Raina for Zimbabwe tour next month especially in the One day International format.

5. Murugan Ashwin

Murugan Ashwin plays for Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy. He made his list ‘’A” debut on 11th December in 2015 in Vijay Hazare Trophy and T20 debut on 2 Jan 2016 in the Syed Musthaq Ali trophy. He was bought by Pune Super Giants for 4.5 Crores. In the first few matches he was impressive with his variations not allowing the batsmen to score runs freely and also picked wickets for Pune Super Giants. A right arm off spinner  to bowl stump to stump makes him a good bowler. In Zimbabwe M Ashwin could be tried in place of his names sake R Ashwin in both formats.
