5 players who played key role in India’s 3-0 win over South Africa

India beat South Africa in the four match test series by 3-0 which is a great performance by the team. The South African came to the test series not losing an away series for 9 long years but India played some positive cricket in the entire series. Each player of the Indian contributed to the success which led India to a great win over the number 1 ranked test team in the world. By the virtue of this series win India has jumped to number 2 in the test rankings. Here we look at 5 players which played a key role in India’s 3-0 win over South Africa.

  1.        R Ashwin

R Ashwin was the main bowler for India in this test series against South Africa. In the 4 test matches he picked 31 wickets. In the first test match he picked a total of 8 wickets. With the pitches helping the spinners he spun the ball and never gave a chance for the South African batsmen to dominate. In the second test match where the match was washed due to rain he picked a total of 4 wickets, in the third match in Nagpur where the pitch was turning from day 1 he picked a total of 12 wickets in the match. In the last test match in Delhi he picked the crucial wickets of Bavuma and AB De Villers in the second innings. He finished with 7 wickets in the match. He was named the man of the series for his excellent bowling in the series.

  1.        Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja too played a crucial role in India’s victory in all test matches especially in the fourth test match. He bowled line and length dismissing two crucial batsmen of Du Plessis and Hashim Amla with two excellent deliveries. He caused problems to all South African batsmen and never allowed them to settle. In the first test match he picked a total of 8 wickets, in the second he picked 4 wickets, in the third test match he picked a total of 4 wickets. He did not pick any wicket in the second innings in the third test. In the last test match he picked 7 wickets in the match. He picked a total of 23 wickets in the series. He and Ashwin as a pair were exceptional. He bowled with patience and took wickets when the captain required him to take wickets.  

  1.        Murali Vijay

Murali Vijay showed the way how to play on tough wickets. The pitches in Mohali and Nagpur were tough to bat on but Murali Vijay applied himself and scored crucial runs. In the first test match where other Indian batsmen struggled he scored 75 in the first innings and 47 in the second innings. In the rain washed test match at Bangalore he remained not out on 28. In the third test match his score of 40 in the first innings remained the highest score of the match. In the fourth test match at Delhi he was not able to contribute too much with the bat. He finished the test series with 210 runs. His performance helped the Indian team to get competitive totals as other batsmen struggled on spinning pitches.      

  1. Rahane

Rahane played a crucial role in the fourth test match at Delhi. The Indian team was struggling in the first innings at 138 for 6. Rahane partnerships with Jadeja and Ashwin put up an excellent partnership which helped India to recover from the loss of early wickets. Rahane played great shots of the fast bowlers and also took the attack to spinners. He really showed the technique and temperament on tough Feroshah Kotla pitch. On Day 2 he completed his century. He was out on 127 which helped India to reach a competitive total of 334. In the 2nd innings too India were struggling at 57 for 4. Rahane and Kohli made sure that India reached safety in the second innings. Rahane played attacking strokes on the fourth day and remained not out on 100. He became the fifth Indian batsmen to reach 100 in both innings. He did not score too many runs in the previous 2 test matches. He was the highest runs scorer in the test series with 266 runs.   

  1.        Umesh Yadav

Umesh Yadav played in the first test match but did not pick too many wickets. He was dropped the next two test matches. He played in the fourth test match at Delhi and he bowled a great spell in the second innings. He bowled with pace and hurried the batsmen with reverse swing. He gave AB De Villiers a tough time. After tea he picked the wickets of Dane Villas, Kyle Abbott and Dane Pidet. He bowled 21 over’s picking 3 wickets for 9 runs only. In the first innings too he picked 2 wickets of Elgar and Duminy. His fast spell helped India to win the test series by 3-0. He came in place of Amit Mishra. Umesh Yadav produced an excellent spell of fast bowling.
