After finishing seventh ,eighth and ninth in the previous three seasons of IPL, much was expected from Delhi Daredevils this season after their smart business in this year’s auction. But the way they were thrashed by two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders in their season opener, it will take a herculean effort from the team to get their
season back on track.
Well, it will be too soon to judge them but the way they lost the first match, it looks like the team management will have to make their strategy once again from the scratch as nothing looked right for them in the first match.
Here we look at what the Delhi Daredevils need to do in order to get their season back on track:
1. Team Selection:
The team selection was not up to the mark in the opener. The team management should have dropped one of the pacers to make room for one more batsman and for a young batting line up like Delhi’s it was very important. Playing Pawan Negi at number six totally backfired. The team management should include experienced batsman like JP Duminy who can support this young batting line up.
There is no denying the fact that to handle a team full of youngsters an experienced captain was needed but appointing Zaheer Khan as the captain could step back for the Delhi franchise. He looked out of sorts in the first game and if he wants to lead Delhi to a respectable position then he needs to improve his captaincy by leaps and bounds.
3. Responsible batting:
On a pitch that was assisting the bowlers, Delhi batsmen showed no signs of applying themselves as poor shot selection led them to post a paltry target of 99. The team management have shown a lot of faith in these youngsters and to prove them right they must take the responsibility. With an experienced coach like Rahul Dravid at the helm, they have the perfect guide to lead them to glory but again to achieve that they will have to improve a lot.
The pitch was assisting the bowlers but still the KKR batsmen looked completely at ease which clearly showed the flaws in Delhi’s bowling line up. Zaheer Khan was all over the place and looked a pale shadow of his former self. The management should find a way to include Mohammad Shami who can play a crucial role in these conditions for the team.
Well, someone can say that T20 is for youngsters but the recent history has shown that when it comes to winning the tournament, nothing beats experience. With only JP Duminy in the squad, the management should include him in the playing eleven at any cost.
The young batsmen were totally clueless against experienced bowling line-up of KKR and someone like JP Duminy can help them to cope up with situations like that. Daredevils have willingly adopted a youth-first policy from this season, despite a wholesome purse available to them in the players’ auctions. Only time will tell whether this gamble is right or not. For the time being the team needs to improve in every department to repay the faith shown by the franchise in them.
