7 Indian Players Who Have Played More IPL Matches Than Limited Overs International

IPL has been a sort of respite for the Indian players who have been deprived of chances at the International level. There are number of the cricketers who had only a handful of chances to play at the international level despite deserving the opportunities. The reason can be varied – fitness, patchy form, and co,petition. However, such names, who would have been forgotten in some other generation, aptly remained in the minds of the cricket fans through their showings in the IPL. In fact, some of the prominent names have had a longer IPL career as compared to their international career. Here in this article, Sportzwiki picks 7 such cricketers who have played more IPL matches than limited overs international cricket.

Ambati Rayudu:

Ambati Rayudu story starts in reverse where IPL comes before international career. He owes his career to IPL. All his efforts at the domestic level never brought him enough success. However, the IPL recognised him as a reliable talent capable to turning matches on his own. His prolific run scoring abilities got him an IPL contract in 2010 with Mumbai Indians. Ever since, he has grown as a highly reputed player and remains an important part of the team ever since. His fine run for Mumbai Indians translated into a place in the national squad in 2014 and he made his debut against Zimbabwe in 2013. Unfortunately, he hasn’t able to cement his place in the limited overs team. The reason being largely due to strong competition. In his short international career, he has played 40 matches for India as opposed to 109 IPL games he has played across 8 seasons.

Robin Uthappa:

The versatile Karnataka cricketer’s time as an international cricketer wasn’t a prolonged one. His international limited overs career, which began in 2006 against England, saw him play in only 46 ODIs and 13 T20Is. The last time he featured in in the national side as against Zimbabwe at Harare in 2015.  While he may have failed t be a regular name in the Indian setup, his IPL career was always stable as the demand for his qualities always remained high.  The attacking top order batsman began his IPL career with Mumbai Indians before moving to Royal Challengers Bangalore and eventually settling down with Kolkata Knight Riders since the 2014. In all, Uthappa has played 135 matches, scoring over 3000 runs in that span. This clearly reflects that he played more than the double number of IPL matches than his ODIs and T20Is combined.

Parthiv Patel:

Parthiv Patel can unarguably put in the category of the ‘unfortunate talented’ cricketer who missed out a great chunk of their international career due to the presence another star player overshadowing their presence. It’s a well – known fact that the Gujarat wicket keeper made his debut as a teenager aged just 17 year old. A long, eventful career seemed to be awaiting the baby faced cricketer. But, what unfolded in his career were completely contrasting to the predictions. He has played in only 40 limited overs matches (38 ODIs and 2 T20Is). His IPL stats, however, are very significant and speak a very different story. The 29 year old, who currently plays for Mumbai Indians, played for a number of franchise since the inaugural season and has 103 IPL games under his belt.

Amit Mishra:

The orthodox leg spinner was always the player who was in the reckoning to make it big never actually did it. The presence of the likes of Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh during the early stage of his career and Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja in his latter part of the career effectively cut out the number of time he could represent the national time. Although he still continues to be a a part of the limited overs setup, his place always remains bit uncertain. However, he has successfully dominate the domestic scene as well as the IPL. Since making his debut against South Africa in 2003, Mishra has played only 46 limited overs games (36 ODIs and 10 T20Is). On the other hand, the leggie has played 112 IPL games, taking 124 wickets since first appearing in 2008 for Delhi Daredevils.

Piyush Chawla:

Piyush Chawla is also among those ‘young promising cricketers’ who never made an long lasting impact at the international level. The stocky leg spinner could never cement his place in the Indian side and played only 32 limited overs matches (25 ODIs and 7 T20Is). The IPL, however, made sure that cricket fans never missed him playing. Chawla has been one of the most reputed in the IPL universe. The 28 year old has so far played 123 matches and has 120 wickets to his name. He currently ply his trade for Kolkata Knight Riders who splurged 4.25 crores in the 2014 auctions.

Murali Vijay:

Known for his compact technique, Murali Vijay filed to press his claims in the India limited overs team. The ‘Test specialist’ label stuck with him ever since he made his debut versus South Africa at Ahmedabad in 2010. In all, he could play just 26 matches (17 ODIs and 9 T20Is) and these appearances saw him score just over 400 run overall. The stats obviously speak why he was never able to cement his place in the team. However, his IPL career was a bit more successful. The IPL franchise saw him as the one who brought stability and in a T20 side. This faith enabled his play his the reputation of consistent run maker as opener. So far, the right hander has played 100 matches with over 2500 runs to his credit. These runs have come across three franchise since first appearing in the 2009 season with the Chennai Super Kings.

Yusuf Pathan:

The hard hitting Baroda all-rounder cannot be entirely considered as someone who couldn’t make it at the international level. He suited the shorter format and it was quite visible in the 2008 IPL season where he scored 435 runs with four fifties at a strike-rate of 179. This earned him an ODI call-up for the tri-series in Bangladesh immediately after the culmination of the season. However, although success did not elude him completely, his form soon became patchy and his international career saw a downfall after featuring in the 2011 World Cup winning squad. In all, he has played 57 ODIs and 22 T20Is in career so far. His IPL career, at the other hand, hasn’t seen a major dip. He currently plays for the Kolkata Knight Riders and has been part of two title winning seasons. Ahead of the 2017 season, the 34 year old’s IPL stats read 2761 runs in 134 matches.
