A Player Selects Or Drops Himself: Madan Lal

For the first time in the history, it looks like Delhi cricket will be back on a smooth road as more than a month before the start of the season, the coaches for various age groups have been announced along with the other members of the support staff.

Delhi has imported like of Manoj Prabhakar, to help its bowlers and looking at the current coaching staff along with the players, the team looks one of the best sides to go in the domestic circuit.

It has looked one of the best sides in the domestic circuits for years now, even when there were no Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir in the team due to their international commitments but the players have failed to convert the talent into results. The last time Delhi won Ranji Trophy was in 2007/08, under the tutelage of Vijay Dahiya. From past five years, the best performance of Gautam Gambir led side came in 2014/15 when the team qualified for quarter final before losing out to Mumbai.

Post that, Delhi is yet to win any major tournament. This year though, the preparations are going quite well with the state association already taking steps in build up for the season.

Madan Lal, who has been given the job to improve Delhi cricket, is a man on a mission and the former Indian all-rounder has asked Delhi team to do well in the season and aim for big i.e. to win the Ranji Trophy,

“When we played for Delhi, under the captaincy of Bishan (Singh Bedi), the aim was to secure a spot in the India team. You have to dream big. We just wanted to play for India and in the process gave winning performances for Delhi. You have to aim for the best. Winning the Ranji Trophy gives you a pride of place and also a chance to 11 players to play the Irani Cup,” Madan Lal told The Hindu.

The questions regarding insecurity was an automatic one as last season, few of the young and talented players were dropped from the team after a downfall in form and again, the Cricket Affairs Committee has appointed the man who was seen as the prime reason for that, KP Bhaskar,

“I want to assure the players that they need not feel insecure at all. A player selects or drops himself. How can selectors not pick you if you do well? Madan Lal is not going to win the match for you. He can help you in guiding you to win. The effort has to come from the players,” he said on being asked upon the issue.

The upcoming domestic season will start on October 6. Delhi is placed in Group A alongside Karnataka, Assam, Maharashtra, Hyderabad, Uttar Pradesh and Railways.
