The Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) is all set to construct world’s largest cricket stadium at Motera worth a whopping 700 crore, of which the foundation stone was laid on Monday.
The newly built stadium is expected to be completed within two years and will be eyeing to seat around 110,00,00 people into it. By now the biggest stadium in the world is Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Melbourne with a capacity of one lakh people.
The foundation stone for the colossal stadium was laid by Parimal Nathwani, the Vice President of GCA and Group President, Reliance Industries Ltd. Nathwani, however, is also a Rajya Sabha MP from Jharkhand.
Nathwani said the new cricket stadium, replacing the old one at the same site, will be spread over approximately 63 acres of land. The old stadium was razed to the ground recently. India and England did play a Test on the same ground in 2012, where the hosts came out winners.
The presence of heavy duty construction equipment, the Motera site now gives the appearance of a mega project site, said Nathwani.
“There will be a concourse to connect the entire stadium for pedestrian and vehicular movement. Moreover, the new club house will be equipped with 50-55 rooms and an Olympic-size swimming pool.”
M/s. STUP Consultant Pvt Ltd is the project management consultant and M/s. Populus, the architect and designer of the new Motera Stadium, which also designed the Melbourne Cricket Stadium. Larsen and Toubro will be the principal contractor. Going by the reports, there will be 76 corporate boxes in the newly built stadium.
