Alastair Cook Likely To Take Captaincy Call On Friday

As per sources within the ECB, England’s Test captain Alastair Cook is expected to meet Director of England Cricket, Andrew Strauss on Friday to take a decision on his future as the man in charge of the team. Cook wasn’t too keen to continue as the captain, after his team was battered and bruised in India by a margin of 4-0. More worrying for Cook was the fact that he himself couldn’t score much in order to lead from the front.

If Cook decides to quit as England’s captain on Friday, then in all likeliness, his successor will be batting protégé Joe Root. Root is a front-runner to take over the leadership of England’s Test unit as his own batting form has been prolific. Despite a poor tour of India, Cook remains England’s most successful Test captain, at par with Strauss, with 24 wins to his name.

Recently, wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow was asked about his take on Cook’s future as the team’s captain. Bairstow said that an accomplished individual like Cook was capable of taking the best decision and he shouldn’t be doubted.

“You’re questioning a guy who’s got 11,000 Test runs, the most decorated English Test match player we’ve ever had,” Bairstow said. “To be questioning him so much about whether he should stay on…I think it’s up to him whether or not he wants to stay on. He’s got to make that decision and when he does I’m sure it will be the right one for him and the team.”

“It’s naturally a tough decision, but it’s not one, to be quite honest with you, he’ll have been thinking about over Christmas because he’ll have been having a fantastic time with his family and his newborn and everyone back on the farm. He’ll have taken that completely off his mind.”
