IPL 2017: Andrew Tye, Batsmen Raze Gujarat Lions To Chase First Win Against Rising Pune Supergiant

Changed skipper before the start of the season, made five changes on Friday, spent 14.5 Crores on Ben Stokes but still, the team is placed at last position in the points table with just a win and three losses so far.

Rising Pune Supergiant continued their poor form in the current season to lose their third consecutive game.

Though it was the first win of the season for Suresh Raina-led Gujarat Lions as the home side posted their third win over Pune in three competitions these two teams have been involved in. It was some brilliant batting from the openers and pleasing efforts from the duo of Suresh Raina-Aaron Finch that saw Gujarat flying past the total of Pune.

Chasing 172 to win their first game of the season, openers Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum dispensed 94 runs in just 8.5 overs. The pair of the two demolished each and every bowler coming their way. The 35-runs scored in first two overs of Imran Tahir’s spell was the highlight, as the number one bowler in T20I cricket was sent for 15 runs in his first over but skipper Steven Smith gave him another go.

This time, McCullum welcomed him with two fours followed by six and churned out 20 runs from his over.

McCullum wanted to continue his Boom-Boom batting but in the quest to hit for a biggie, he found himself out of the crease with neither his bat nor his feet inside the crease. McCullum was stumped off Rahul Chahar delivery, but this did not fade winning hopes for the hosts.

Skipper Suresh Raina and Aaron Finch joined each other and shared 61-runs for the fourth wicket to see their team getting past the winning total.

Finch concluded the game in his own style by hitting two back to back sixes off Lockie Ferguson to finish the game two overs early.

Toss too played an important role in the win, as after asking Pune to bat first, Gujarat got an early breakthrough in form of Ajinkya Rahane who was dismissed for zero.

Skipper Steven Smith and Rahul Tripathi bind the innings quite well and baked 64 runs for the second wicket, batting at more than 10 runs/over.

Tripathi’s wicket meant it was time for Ben Stokes to come out to the crease. After a distance of 25 runs, Smith was dismissed, which put pressure on Stokes and after playing an innings of 25, he also walked back to the pavilion after being bowled by Andrew Tye.

All the hopes were on former skipper MS Dhoni but another failure followed. Ankit Sharma’s cameo and a responsible inning of 31 from Manoj Tiwary saw the team getting past 150 before Ankit was dismissed when team’s score was 167.

What followed after his wicket was something unrealistic, as Andrew Tye, who was bowling the last over of Pune’s innings went on to dismiss Manoj Tiwary and Shardul Thakur on following deliveries to affect the second historic hat-trick of the day.

It was a big achievement for the Australian pacer, as it was the first time when a debutant took a five -for and a hat-trick on IPL debut.

Probably, going with a spin heavy attack was the biggest gaffe for the losing team, as looking at the stats, it was the pacers who have a better record at the end of the day.

Brief Score: Gujarat Lions 172/3 (Brendon McCullum 49, Dwayne Smith 47; Shardul Thakur 1-14) vs Rising Pune Supergiant 171/8 (Steven Smith 43, Manoj Tiwary 31; Andrew Tye 5-17) at SCA stadium in Rajkot.
