Angelo Mathews To Continue As Sri Lanka Skipper Until 2019 World Cup

The Sri Lanka Cricket Board has decided to continue with Angelo Mathews as the national side’s skipper until the conclusion of the 50-over World Cup in 2019, which is scheduled in England.

Lankan selectors have shown faith in the 29-year-old Mathews even after being thrashed by South Africa 3-0 in the recently concluded Test series.

“Angelo has our fullest backing. We are looking at him leading us at the 2019 World Cup,” SLC president Thilanga Sumathipala said.

SLC selectors are hopeful to see the all-rounder uniting the youngsters and inexperienced side to set a mark in future.

Sri Lanka team has struggled on field after the exit of veterans Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene in 2015 and have failed to win big series, especially overseas.

“We have some aggressive plans leading up to the T20s and ODIs (in South Africa). Angelo is a kind of guy who takes responsibility and we are confident that he will help the team turn things around,” Sumathipala added.

After the 3-0 whitewash against the Proteas, Mathews also admitted that it was his worst loss as a skipper during his career which was followed by severe criticism back home over the teams’ overall performance.

However, SLC Chief Selector and former left-handed batsman Sanath Jayasuriya was not surprised over the drubbing of Lankans in South Africa by stating that the side lacked experience.

“As the Sri Lanka team is full of young blood, it is not a surprise that they faced a setback in South Africa. This is not a time to blame and destroy Mathews’ captaincy. This is a time when we have to strengthen Mathews, Jayasuriya said.

“As a former captain I know how these allegations can badly affect Mathews’ morale, especially during a series. We have to support Mathews, correct our faults and face the T20I and ODI series with confidence,” Jayasuriya concluded.

Mathews has played 65 Tests, 160 ODIs and 66 T20Is for Sri Lanka since making his international debut in 2008 against Zimbabwe in Harare.
