BCCI allows girlfriends to join Indian Team

  • Perhaps this is the best news Virat Kohli was waiting for. Yes, in a modified decision, the BCCI has allowed a partner to join the cricketers expanding the previous rule which included only wives. The companion can spend quality time together for nearly 15 days.

Hopefully, now Anushka Sharma can join in the New Year celebration with Virat Kohli in Australia. In the latest development, the BCCI has actually opened up a window for the partners, rather the WAGs, of the Indian cricketers, to travel Down Under. The BCCI’s favor however, is only partial, as the board has ‘lifted’ the ban on the girlfriends joining the players, it has made it clear that they cannot share the rooms.
It means Anushka can officially be alongside his heart throb and can stay in the team hotel, but cannot share Kohli’s room. The BCCI has allowed this privilege only for the wives of the players.

It is understood that a number of girlfriends of other players are about to leave for Australia and one of them is believed to be the Bollywood star. BCCI has intimated the players that the spouses can stay till the end of the fourth Test in Sydney. The Test ends on January 10.

The Board has taken a liberal stand, as they think it not appropriate to impose restrictions on the girlfriends, particularly in these times of live-in relationships.

“We have to be sensitive to these issues. We cannot have a cast-in-iron rule that only wives are going to be allowed to meet the players. We will have no problem with the girlfriends as well”, BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said.

It is important to highlight that the vice-captain is not the only player to have sought permission for his celebrity girlfriend, as even Robin Uthappa had previously requested the board to have his girlfriend travel with him. He was granted permission on that occasion. Let us hope that this brilliant step of the BCCI will yields a positive result. Perhaps we can now wish for some lady luck.
