Former Indian batsman VVS Laxman has appreciated the move of making Rahul Dravid as India’s batting mentor for the upcoming series against England. In India’s previous outing to England, Dravid was the highest run getter for India.

This is a good move considering India’s poor show with the bat in their recent tour to South Africa and New Zealand. But, it will be note worthy on the impact Dravid can cause, since apart from Pujara and Rahane, no other seems to be following his class .

Laxman added that this is a good move considering Dravid’s record in English conditions. He stressed on Dravid’s role in not just technical aspect of the game but also on mental aspect, the strategy to plan an innings, which is a key to success in English conditions.

Playing a long innings and staying longer on the crease has been a major problem for Indian batsman and Dravid can certainly help at it, considering that he was a master when it came to staying longer on the crease. It was only under Rahul Dravid that India managed to win a Test series there, last time in 2007.

On Dravid’s performance on India’s previous tour to England, Laxman said it was just superb. He added that facing the new ball in English conditions ia a nightmare , simply because of the amount of assistance bowlers get , both from the pitch and the weather , and Dravid opened in 2 Test matches there.

The fact that English bowling line up has not changed much since then and Dravid has faced them all and this will help him to guide the youngsters.

Dravid began his Test career in England at Lords where he narrowly missed a century on debut and limelight was taken away by another debutant, Sourav Ganguly , who scored a century. Laxman attributed to Dravid’s mental discipline for his successful outings of England.
