In reply, the Aussies took a 26-run lead, thanks to a fantastic ton by their skipper Steven Smith who scored his 21st Test century and remained not out on 141. In the second innings, England batsmen had a horrific time in the middle, as they were bundled out on a mere 195. Skipper Joe Root was the only player to go past 50 but was dismissed soon after he crossed the milestone.

Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazelwood, and Nathan Lyon picked up three wickets in the second innings.
