Ashes 2017/18, 1st Test, Brisbane: England Team Player Ratings

Australia took a 1-0 lead, as they defeated England by ten wickets in the first Test at the Gabba, Brisbane early on day five of the Test.
David Warner and Cameron Bancroft remained unbeaten while chasing a target of 170 in the second innings. Bancroft scored his maiden half-century in his Debut Test, whereas, Warner continued his good form at home, as he remained not out on 87.
The two teams will now go to Adelaide where the second match of the Ashes is scheduled to be played on 2nd December. It will also be the first Day-Night Ashes Test match.
England in the first innings performed decently and scored 302, courtesy an impressive half-century by James Vince who was playing his first Ashes Test. Useful contributions were made by England’s lower-order batsmen as well to take England to a respectable total.
In reply, the Aussies took a 26-run lead, thanks to a fantastic ton by their skipper Steven Smith who scored his 21st Test century and remained not out on 141. In the second innings, England batsmen had a horrific time in the middle, as they were bundled out on a mere 195. Skipper Joe Root was the only player to go past 50 but was dismissed soon after he crossed the milestone.
Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazelwood, and Nathan Lyon picked up three wickets in the second innings.

Alastair Cook- 1/10
England had high hopes from their former skipper Alastair Cook but the southpaw disappointed in both innings, as he managed two and seven, respectively in both the innings.
Mark Stoneman- 5/10
Mark Stoneman played pretty well for his 53 runs in the first innings giving a solid company to James Vince for the second wicket partnership. He then got a start in the second innings as well but was dismissed for just 27 runs.
James Vince- 6/10
James Vince looked set for his maiden century in Tests but was dismissed by a brilliant piece of fielding by Nathan Lyon on 83. He was England’s top scorer in the first innings but could not repeat the performance, as he got dismissed for just two runs.
Joe Root (C) – 5/10
Joe Root did a below par job as a captain in the first innings losing a crucial advantage when Australia was tottering at 209/7. The Aussies went on to take a 26-run lead in the first innings. As a batsman also he had a decent match. He scored 15 runs in the first innings and 51 runs in the second innings.
Dawid Malan- 4/10
Dawid Malan was impressive in the first innings, as he scored a fluent half-century playing his first Ashes Test. However, Malan disappointed in the second innings when the team needed him to perform. He was dismissed for just four runs.
Moeen Ali- 6/10
The all-rounder impressed the most with both bat and ball in the first Test. He scored 38 runs in the first innings and picked up the wickets of Usman Khwaja and Josh Hazelwood in Australia’s first innings. In the second innings, Ali scored a crucial innings of 40 runs taking the team to a respectable total.
Jonny Bairstow- 4/10
England’s wicket-keeper batsman, Jonny Bairstow couldn’t live up to the expectations, as he could only manage 51 runs in the Test match. Behind the stumps, he had a decent game, as he was involved in just two Australian dismissals in the first innings.
Chris Woakes- 2/10
Chris Woakes picked up just one wicket in the first Test on a pitch which had a lot to offer for the fast bowlers.
Stuart Broad- 4/10
Stuart Broad picked up the crucial wickets of Cameron Bancroft and Shaun Marsh in the first innings and also picked up the wicket of Mitchell Starc, but he could not capitalize on the pressure created in the first innings.
Jake Ball- 1/10
The only high point for Jake Ball in the Test match was that he picked up the vital wicket of David Warner in the first innings.
James Anderson- 2/10
James Anderson performed below par in the first Test as he could only manage to pick up two wickets in the first innings. England expects more from the veteran fast bowler to retain the Urn.
