Ashes 2017-18: Brisbane Test – Australia Player Ratings

The first Test of the Ashes 2017-18 opener was convincingly won by Australia by 10 wickets after riding on unbeaten fifties scored each by openers; David Warner and debutant Cameron Bancroft at Gabba in Brisbane on the fifth morning of the fixture.

England woes had continued particularly in the batting line-up which further saw a promising bowling line-up struggled to claim even a solitary wicket during the second innings of Australia.

For Australia, skipper Steven Smith led from the front – to smash his 21st hundred in the just-concluded Text fixture.

For the first couple of days, England seemed to be well prepared but looked further rusty when the side was rattled out on 195 following the short-ball ploy by Australian bowlers.

As traditionally it has been hard to opt for bowling on the surface like Gabba, Smith has a different thought to work on which further saw the Joe Root-led England was all out on 302 in 116.4 overs.

In response, Australia claimed the lead of 26 runs after scoring 328 in first innings.

Moreover, Australia required 170 runs as the target was chased down in 50 overs.

With hosts leading the five-match traditional series now 1-0, England has a lot to work on this time around in a bid to level the series.

However, the pink-ball Test would test the visitors in Adelaide beginning from December 2; Australia would be brimming with confidence after registering an emphatic win over the Three Lions:

Deputy of Steven Smith, David Warner, who scored 43-ball 26 runs in the first innings, following the long vigil in the second innings walked off unbeaten on 87 after facing 119 balls.

Known for his aggressive approach, Warner played an imperative role with the bat owing to the patience of staying at the crease.

The decent start from Warner has further boosted the morale of Cameron Bancroft.

After being dismissed cheaply on five off 19 deliveries when he perished on the bowling of Stuart Broad, the debutant in the form of Cameron Bancroft has been outstanding with the bat in second innings.

The 25-year-old promising batsman Bancroft, who has been picked after the spectacular run in the JLT Sheffield Shield competition for Western Australia side, remained unbeaten on 82 after consuming 182 balls.

Showing some maturity in his early days of international cricket, Bancroft is expected to deliver for Australia.

In his hard-fought knock, Bancroft smashed 10 boundaries and a solitary six.

Usman Khawaja – 1/10:

The 30-year-old left-handed batsman Usman Khawaja struggled in the first innings at the top. Known for scoring runs at and rotating the strike, Khawaja faced 24 balls to score 11 runs, before he was trapped by Moeen Ali, as he has now been under the radar for not handling spin well.

However, he is capable of playing an integral part while donning the Australian white jersey.

Steven Smith – 9/10:

The 28-year-old Steven Smith has been spectacular with the bat particularly in the Test fold and he has repeated it against England.

The right-handed batsman smashed yet another hundred and this came when Australia was reeling at 76 for four in 24.5 overs in first innings.

Smith, who was declared Man of the Match, has now played 57 Tests in which he scored 5,511 runs at an average of 61.23.

In his 105 Test innings, Smith registered 21 hundreds and 21 fifties each.

The Melbourne-born right-handed batsman Peter Handscomb, who’s a rollicking start in the Test format, is further eyeing to give best at home against England but he has subsequently failed to impress in the first innings in which he was just able to score 14 off 17 deliveries.

Shaun Marsh – 5/10:

The 34-year-old Shaun Marsh answered his critics with fifty on his return after winning the number six Test spot.

Moreover, Marsh further pulled Australia out of trouble alongside Smith in first innings.

The left-handed batsman smashed 51 off 141 balls, as his innings was comprised of eight boundaries.

Tim Paine – 4/10:

With his more of a surprising comeback in the Test fold after seven years, Tim Paine took 42 balls to score 13, but he was decent behind the stumps.

Paine claimed two catches and sealed a stumping dismissal of England all-rounder Moeen Ali on the bowling of Nathan Lyon.

Mitchell Starc – 6/10:

The pace bowling spearhead Mitchell Starc claimed six wickets in the match which further saw him bowling with a lot of energy to make things difficult for England.

Early on, Starc has played a significant role with the red-ball to be among the wickets column.

Pat Cummins 6.5/10:

Playing his first-ever Test at home claimed three wickets in the first innings, before playing a vital role in the late batting order. Cummins scored 42 off 120 balls, as he knitted 66 runs for the eighth wicket alongside Smith.

Josh Hazlewood – 6/10:

After picking a solitary wicket in the first innings, Josh Hazlewood, who has been incredible for Australia in the top-flight cricket, also picked four wickets in the match while been banking on his strength.

Owing to his consistency and accuracy and ability to pile up the miseries for batsmen, Hazlewood should have delivered more.

Nathan Lyon – 6/10:

The off-spinner, who sent 24 overs in the second innings for bagging three wickets, has been somewhat a man of the moment particularly with the ball as a slow-bowling option.

Showing his passion when he effected the run-out of James Vince, Lyon walked off with five wickets in the match.

With the bat, Lyon faced 22 balls to score nine.
