Ashes 2017/18: Mitchell Starc Should Bowl Smarter on a Lively Gabba Deck – Stuart Clark
Nov 8, 2017 at 12:04 PM
Former Australia fast-bowler Stuart Clark has a piece of advice for the fiery left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc, who recently entered into the record books picking up two hat-tricks in two innings in a JLT Sheffield Shield game against Western Australia.
Clark said Starc should bowl smarter on lively 22 yards of Gabba where the first Ashes Test takes off against England, starting November 23.
“He can bowl full and fast and straight. What gets him in a bit of trouble is he probably tries it a bit too much when the wicket has got a bit of life in it. He doesn’t bowl enough balls at a good length so that they nick it behind,” Clark said while talking to Sky Sports Radio.
Mitchell Starc outstanding spell in both the innings handed his team New South Wales a critical victory against the Western Australia by 171 runs, yet Clark was of the opinion that Starc needs to bowl better to utilise the juicy Gabba deck.
The former right-arm pacer pointed out that Starc’s Sheffield shield heroics has shown that he blasts out the tailenders, as both the hat-tricks included the wickets of the lower-order batsmen.
“When it comes to blasting out the tailenders or the surprise ball, you would throw him the ball every day of the week and say ‘have a lash at this’ because you know he will knock them over,” the 42-year-old Clark remarked.
However, he also admitted bowling fast would not be a problem for Starc, as the Western Australia batsmen were terrified by the left-arm pacers pace judging by the feedback he received from the Western Australia camp.
“I was out there late on day three and talking to Justin Langer, and a few of the guys and they said he was bowling that fast that it is getting scary for those involved. He said the batsmen just stand no chance against him,” Clark signed off.
