R. Ashwin has been the driving force behind India’s inspirational turnaround in test cricket. After a disappointing tour of Australia, where the Indians lost 0-2, the side was at an all time low. Under a new captain, not many expected the side to bounce back so quickly. Ashwin at first had a wonderful outing in Sri Lanka, as he ended the tour as the Man of the series with 21 wickets. That was India’s first series win in Sri Lanka in 22 years.
To add to the icing on the cake, Kohli’s side has now defeated the number one ranked test team, with utmost ease. And once again, who is the chief architect behind the win? R. Ashwin.
After the third test at Nagpur concluded, Kohli was in complete awe of Ashwin and said that he was undoubtedly the best spinner in world cricket. “Ashwin is a world-class spinner, he stepped up in a big way for us, maybe the best in the world at the moment, we expected them to string in a partnership or two,” said Kohli about Ashwin in the post-match presentation.
“This is what Test cricket is, we need patience with the ball and believing a chance will come. Mishra showed great character in that period. I think it was a challenging wicket, the batsmen applied better in Mohali. It is all about application. There are no sorts of excuses on that, our batsmen showed character in three innings,” said a delighted Kohli.
“Sometimes you have conditions where it is going to be bowler-friendly, chances can be created. Spinner s have had an upper hand in the series. Sealing the series was very important, Delhi will be an opportunity for us to be more consistent,” concluded Kohli.
