An uncapped pacer Chadd Sayers is included and pacer Jackson Bird is called up in the Australia’s 14-men Test squad for the upcoming New Zealand tour in the next month.
This two replace fast bowler Scott Boland and spinner Steve O’Keefe from the final Test squad against West Indies. Peter Siddle also recovers from his ankle injury which he suffered during the “Boxing Day” Test against West Indies at Melbourne. Due to this injury, Siddle missed the last Test which was washed out due to rain. Siddle has not played any match after that injury but set to make a comeback in the Sheffield Shield before the Test series.
On the other hand, Australian selectors are continuously monitoring James Pattinson’s fitness, though he is in the 14-man squad. Pattinson is suffering shin soreness, for which he missed the Monday’s BBL (Big Bash League) match.
National selector Rod Marsh said about the selection, “We are delighted to welcome Chadd Sayers into the squad for the first time and his inclusion is thoroughly deserved. Both he and Jackson Bird can swing the ball and operate at a lively pace and we believe both will be well suited to the conditions we are likely to encounter in New Zealand.
“We are hopeful James Pattinson will be able to overcome the shin soreness he has been suffering with and continue the fine form he showed in this summer’s Tests when he bowled at good pace, while Peter Siddle is on the verge of playing again following the ankle injury he suffered during the West Indies series.”
Australia will play two Tests in the New Zealand tour starting from 12th February after the 3-match ODI series against New Zealand in New Zealand.
