Under-fire batsmen Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul got India off a steady start a they ended the day 2 on 71/1. Murali Vijay got out to Mitchell Starc in the very first over of the innings, but Rohit and Rahul kept going and made sure that they didn’t lose any more wickets by the end of the day. 

Earlier, Australia started the day 2 on 348/2 with skipper Steven Smith and Shane Watson at the crease. Both of them scored at a good pace and Smith brought up his fourth century in as many Tests. Watson also supported him pretty well but lost his wicket to Mohammad Shami. He scored 81. Smith also got out shortly after Watson and Australia went onto lunch at 420/4 with Shaun Marsh and Joe Burns playing. 

After the lunch, both added runs at a brisk pace and brought up their half-centuries. Marsh scored 73 before losing his wicket to Shami. Burns innings of 58 also got ended by Shami. Ryan Harris then scored 25 off just 9 balls with 5 fours and Australia ended declared their first innings on 572/7. Mohammad Shami took 5 wickets for 112 runs. This was his second 5-fer in Tests.
