Australia announced their final XI squad for the third and final Test against West Indies, which will be started from 3rd January 2016 at Sydney. Australia made only change as spinner Stephen O’Keefe replaced injured pacer Peter Siddle. Australia will be playing with two spinners in this Test match as Nathan Lyon and Stephen O’Keefe.
Siddle is suffering from an ankle injury which he sustained in the 2nd Test at Melbourne and is not 100% fit for playing the last Test.
Australian skipper Steven Smith told the reporters, “He (Siddle) felt it wasn’t best for him to come into this Test match the way he is at the moment. He’s a great team man and felt he would be letting the team down (if he played). We were probably going to go the two spinners’ option anyway.”
Smith added, “The wicket looks dry so I think it’ll take some spin. Peter Siddle is still a little bit sore. He’ll have a rest for a couple of weeks and hopefully, get himself right for (February’s tour of) New Zealand.”
It will be the first time in the last ten years that Australia will play with two specialist spinners at home. The last time Australia had played with the two specialist spinners at home in 2006 against South Africa at Sydney when Australia had played with Shane Warne and Stuart MacGill.
The left-arm orthodox spinner O’Keefe had played only Test in 2014 against Pakistan, where he picked up 4 wickets. O’Keefe is very excited to play with Nathan Lyon. O’Keefe spoke out, “I enjoy playing with Nathan, he is a humble, lovely guy who I admire a lot and fingers crossed we can get that opportunity again. There are a couple of situations we have bowled the majority of the overs and enjoyed going each side of the bat.”
Looking at the series, Australia has already secured the Test series by leading 2-0 of the three match Test series as they won the first two Tests with big margins.
