Two sixes from James Faulkner in the super-over proved more than enough for Melbourne Stars defeated Sydney Sixers to register their second win of the BBL 04 and keep their semi-final hopes alive.

In the first tied match of BBL 04, Faulkner and Tom Triffitt came out to bat in the super-over for Stars and Faulkner hit two sixes of Brett Lee to take his team’s score to 19.

With 20 runs required to register a win, John Hastings bowled a beautiful over and didn’t even concede a boundary and guided his team to victory.

How the match went into the super-over?

Chasing a target of 151, Melbourne Stars got off to a bad start as they lost Luke Wright for a duck on the third ball of their innings. Kevin Pietersen then came in at number three and smashed the Sixers bowlers all round the park. Pietersen put on a 71-run partnership with Cameron White, who played 31 balls for his 24 run knock. Pietersen then brought up his 2nd fifty of the season and got a great support from Glenn Maxwell, who scored a quick-fire 23. Both Pietersen and Maxwell then got out in quick succession which left James Faulkner and Tom Triffitt to chase 30 runs in the last two overs. With 16 runs required in the last over of Brett Lee, Faulkner and Triffitt did a great job in taking the match to the final ball and sealing a double run to take the match to the super-over. Kevin Pietersen top-scored for them with 54.

Earlier after being put into bat, Sydney Sixers also got off to a bad start as their top-order batsmen Nic Maddinson, Riki Wessels and skipper Moises Henriques got out cheaply. Michael Lumb then got a good support from Jordan Silk and the duo added 69 runs for the 4th wicket. Michael Lumb scored 80 before losing his wicket Scott Boland. With 122/4 in 16.3 overs, Sixers middle-order failed to provide a blasting finish and they ended their innings on 150/6. Scott Boland was the pick of the bowlers for Melbourne Stars as he returned with the figures of 2-19 in 4 overs.

Super-Over Score:

Melbourne Stars 19/0 (Faulkner 15*) defeated Sydney Sixers 9/2 (Hastings 2-9)

Brief Scores:

Sydney Sixers 150/6 (Lumb 80, Boland 2-19) v Melbourne Stars 150/4 (Pietersen 54, Triffitt 25*, Faulkner 17*)
