BBL 2017/18: Usman Khawaja Extends his Contract with Sydney Thunders

The left-handed top-order batsman Usman Khawaja has signed a new three-year deal thus extending his association with Sydney Thunder till the 9th edition of the Big Bash League (BBL).

Khawaja is also the foundation player of the Sydney Thunder.

Usman Khawaja has featured in 21 matches for the club since the league’s inception in between his international commitments marked by two unbeaten centuries in the 5th year of the championship. He had scored 819 runs in total at an average of 51.18 for the club. However, he didn’t feature in any of the matches last season.

“I’ve been here since the first game and always enjoyed it, especially the last few years. The guys are good every time I go back, and it’s very fun, very chilled out, and they’re all good people. When you put that together it makes for good cricket,” Khawaja stated after signing the contract.

Khawaja has had a good start to this season scoring 217 runs in four innings in the JLT Sheffield Shield game for Queensland at an average of 72.33, including a hundred against Victoria in the first game of the season.

Talking about Thunder’s captain Shane Watson, the 30-year-old Khawaja said he is looking forward to playing with him again.

“I love playing with Watto; I’ve played with him a lot over the years and really enjoyed it. We both go about our cricket in a very similar way. I’m just enjoying my cricket, whether it’s playing Grade, for Queensland, the Thunder or Australia. It would be nice to come back and get some wins and hopefully win another trophy,” he admitted.

Usman Khawaja has represented Australia in all the three formats; however, he has been in and out of the team. Playing 24 Tests, 18 ODI’s and 9 T20I’s, he has scored 1728, 469 and 241 runs, respectively.

Former Australia international Michael Hussey, who is the director of Sydney Thunder, said that he is delighted to have Khawaja onboard once again.

“Usman’s been at the club since its formation, he’s obviously a classy player and a real leader in the team. It’s always a balancing act seeing how much he’ll be around, but we’ve seen how much impact he can have playing a limited number of games. I’m absolutely delighted that he’s committed his future to the club,” Hussey concluded.
