BCCI Calls On ICC To Have Two Home-Season Windows

While the International Cricket Council is gearing up to implement its newly-proposed Test and ODI championship, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have reportedly made it clear that it wants to have two windows for home-season secured. As per reports, the BCCI wants to have October-November and February-March as home windows.

Last month, all the full members of the ICC had unanimously given the green light to a nine-team Test and 13-team ODI league, set to take place from 2019 and 2020 respectively. Next months, the officials from all the member bodies will meet in Singapore to chalk out a week-by-week schedule.

ESPNcricinfo has reported that the BCCI has already made the ICC aware of its plan; having invited Geoff Allardice, the ICC general manager (cricket) and the organisation’s point man on scheduling discussions last month.

“The BCCI’s stance has been that these are our windows we will play at home. We have been building on this for a while now,” ESPNcricinfo quoted a BCCI official.

BCCI wants two windows for home-season

Explaining the rationale behind the BCCI’s decision, the official insisted that the board is keen to send the team on an overseas tour just after the Indian Premier League before starting the home season in October which will be followed by home series again in February, perhaps to reduce the workload on the cricketers.

“It is completely logical. After the IPL they want to travel. And then they want to kick off the domestic season with Indian content. And then later in February-March they again want some home content. It is only fair. Lots of boards want a balance. They don’t have five months of intense home cricket and then nothing for the next 12 months. And India have always been very clear about their aims and objectives,” the official explained.

In the last decade or so, India have generally played its home games between October and November. From 2007 to 2017, the team has played 100 international matches during the October-November period. On the other hand, India did not play any Test during the February-March stretch between 2014 and 2016 before hosting Bangladesh and Australia this year. India has also not hosted any ODIs in February or March.

India have toured South Africa, Australia or New Zealand in recent years after playing its home season during the October-November stretch.
