The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Friday (June 23), extended the deadline for fresh applications to July 9. The BCCI’s decision came following Anil Kumble’s acrimonious exit from the job. Earlier this week, Kumble, whose contract with Team India had ended after the Champions Trophy, refused to extend his tenure with the team till the ongoing West Indies tour, citing captain Virat Kohli’s reservation over his ‘style’ of coaching.

The new candidates will join the five already shortlisted candidates – earlier it was six but Kumble has since withdrawn – comprising Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Lalchand Rajput, Richard Pybus and Dodda Ganesh.
Meanwhile, as per reports, the prime reason behind inviting fresh applications was the thought that a number of eligible candidates may not have applied since Kumble himself had re-applied for the post when the BCCI opened the process on May 25. The outgoing India coach, who had enjoyed a highly successful stint, was a direct entry into the process but is now out of the race after quitting the job.
The new coach will be selected in a similar process that saw Kumble leaving behind other competitors to become the coach last year. After the applicants apply for the post, the final shortlist will be forwarded to BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, who will conduct interviews and seek presentations before sending their final choice to the BCCI.
The Men in Blue are currently in the Caribbeans for a limited-overs series without a head coach. For the ongoing series, the BCCI has deputed its general manager M.V. Sridhar to supervise the team management while Sanjay Bangar and R. Sridhar are continuing as the batting and fielding coach respectively.
