BCCI Not In Favour Of Starting Women’s IPL Right Now

After a historic performance by the Indian Women’s team in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017, they have been talks all over the nation that the time is right to start an IPL themed tournament for the women just like the Aussies have started Women’s Big Bash League. Captain Mithali Raj stated that the time is right to start a Women’s but despite India’ sensational performance, the BCCI thinks that a T20 league for women isn’t feasible at this point in time.

As per reports in News 18, BCCI is finding ways to improve the facilities and infrastructure for women’s cricket but is not considering to start a T20 league straight away. The Committee of Administrators (CoA) has taken over its administration and BCCI has given this as a reason for being unable to stage a T20 league for the women at least for now.

“There is no denying the fact that the women cricketers have made us proud. They deserve all the accolades and definitely, this is the time to promote the game in the country and help create a solid foundation for the women’s game to go from strength to strength. But to think of a women’s IPL would be a little far-fetched as it is not financially feasible at present. Also, the current unrest within the BCCI as the board is trying its best to implement the proposals of the Lodha panel at the earliest means that the women’s IPL needs to wait at present,” an unnamed official was quoted as saying by the News 18.

The report further stated that it isn’t the first time that BCCI has come up with such a proposal but the board feels to start a T20 league for women more work needs to be done at the grass root level. The example of Champions League T20 was taken as the league had to be suspended for the low turnout of matches.

“Women’s cricket has got good coverage this time round. But there need to be more international and domestic games that need to be telecast before going for something revolutionary like having a T20 league. One needs to realise that the CLT20 couldn’t be sustained after some time as there weren’t enough viewers keen to watch the top T20 domestic teams from across the globe play each other. A lot of planning needs to go into the whole process,” an official said in the report. So in all likelihood, the Indian Women’s have to wait a bit longer to get a taste of IPL.
