Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has thrown its weight behind Bangladesh Cricket Board who is opposing the idea of two-tier Test championship. Till now, Bangladesh Board was the only board to oppose the two-tier system but now BCCI has too raised a voice in support of BCB. This will surely add weight to the voice of BCB who is not a big name in the ICC as compared to BCCI.

“We are in favor of development of world cricket. But a two-tier system in Test cricket will hamper emerging teams. Therefore, we opposed the proposal in the ICC meet,” a BCCI official told TOI.

The reason why Bangladesh board is opposing the two-tier system is that they fear that at the end of the day they might end up playing against small nations only which will have an impact on the game and also the sponsors etc. In past we have seen the Bangladesh team showing anxiousness to compete against upper-level teams, the introduction of the two-tier system will act as a barrier for BCB.

Surely with BCCI backing Bangladesh, it is a big support to them as BCCI is the biggest powerhouse in ICC. It is also understood that many nations are in favor of the two-tier system but the Asian countries are opposing the system. The final decision on the issue will be take in the upcoming weeks or months and then the fate of the two-tier system will be decided.

There was a wave of joy in BCB when England team agreed to travel Bangladesh for a Test series followed by One-Day clashes but a terrorist attack in Dhaka has put a question mark on the series as now ECB will consult the government before coming here in Dhaka. Last year the Australian cricket team abandoned their Bangladesh citing security reasons. Australia U19 team too backed off from the under19 World Cup due to same issues.
