Bharat Arun Knows The Boys More Than Me, Says Ravi Shastri

The Story

BCCI and the CAC comprising of Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar has finally put an end to all the speculation and rumours surrounding Team India’s nest Head coach and his sub ordinates.

Anil Kumble’s resignation and his candid letter on Twitter kicked off a controversy storm. Few pointed out their fingers at Indian skipper Virat Kohli’s arrogance while others decided to wait for both sides of the stories. Eventually, the matter died a sort of natural death as BCCI gravitated the focus to the bigger concern – finding the next Head Coach of Team India.

The process of sorting and picking the best coach was expected to be carried out in an orderly fashion but things turned out to be somewhat messy with no clear indications the happenings. Therefore, more drama everywhere.

Shastri aboard but what about the support staff?

It was finally a relief to see Ravi Shastri get appointed as the new coach. However, there were still some issues waiting to be resolved after the rumours spread that Rahul Dravid and Zaheer Khan have been appointed as the batting consultant and bowling coach respectively.

But, rumours ended up being just rumours as Bharat Arun, the current bowling coach, was handed over an extension by the BCCI.

Bharat Arun’s appointment was not a bad decision but fans had their reservation against choosing him over someone like Zaheer Khan. Speaking in his first press conference after becoming the head coach, Shastri, defended the Bharat Arun ’s appointment and justified his creditability to hold the position.

“Shastris and Kumbles will come and go, the fabric of the team will remain,” he said while addressing the media ahead of the tour of Sri Lanka.

When asked about Bharat Arun and his contribution during his previous stint with the team, Shastri gave examples of his worthiness in the support staff.

“There is track record there. Fifteen years of his life has been coaching. He has been with A teams, u-19 teams, junior World Cup teams. He knows the boys better than I do.”

“In the 2015 World Cup, our bowlers took 77 out of 80 wickets. If he was a big name, you would have put him on the top of the tree. I don’t need to elaborate too much on what he is good at. It is there for everyone to see.”

The Schedule

India will be playing 3 Tests, 5 ODIs and one T20I against Sri Lanka during the 45-days long series that begins at the end of this month. Galle, Colombo and Kandy will host the three Tests respectively.
