Businessman Sent To Custody In A Case Against World Cup-Winning Bowler

Rahul Chamola, a director of a Delhi-based real estate firm, on Tuesday (September 19), was handed a two-day police custody punishment in a cheque bounce case in which former India fast-bowler Munaf Patel is also an accused. Metropolitan Magistrate Manisha Tripathy allowed custodial interrogation of Chamola.

Delhi resident Sunil Kumar Aggarwal had filed the complaint under the provisions of the Negotiable Instruments Act against Nivas Promoters Pvt Ltd, claiming that the real estate firm had issued him a cheque of Rs 25.50 lakh in June, but it got dishonoured. Patel is one of the directors of the capital-based firm. Reports also claimed that the alleged persons including Patel cheated Aggarwal of crores which were allegedly used in betting and match-fixing.

Aggarwal ‘s lawyer Vijay Aggarwal has stated that his client had claimed that he had paid hefty money for flats in the accused company’s Greater Noida housing project — Oneleaf Troy. Later, the deal was cancelled but while returning the money, the real estate firm issued several cheques to Aggarwal, but they got dishonoured.

“I have come to know that the accused persons have misused the funds in cricket betting and are involved in match fixing and misappropriated the funds by diverting them to Sri Lanka,” the complainant said in his complaint based on which an FIR was registered.

Aggarwal also claimed that he had sent a legal notice to the alleged persons, but it was of no use.

Meanwhile, Patel, who last played for India in 2011, represented the country in 13 Tests, 70 ODIs and 3 T20Is.  An important part of the team that won the 2011 World Cup, Patel took 35 Tests wickets, 76 ODI wickets and 4 T20I wickets. He was last seen in action in this year’s Indian Premier League where he played a couple of games for Gujarat Lions, picking up just a solitary wicket.
