All We Can Do Now Is Keep Looking Towards The World Cup, Says Joe Root

With England’s Champions Trophy coming to a disastrous end following the thrashing they received at the hands of Pakistan in the semifinal, star batsman Joe Root has urged his teammates to leave behind the heartbreaking loss and move forward.

The Champions Trophy hosts were one of the strongest favourites to lift the coveted trophy this year and the way they had begun, no one was giving any other team a chance against them. Moreover, with the tournament being played in their own backyard, this was England’s best chance to end their long wait for a global 50-over event

The Three Lions began the tournament with an impressive win over Bangladesh, chasing down a 300-plus total with utmost ease before getting the better of New Zealand and Australia. However, just when it mattered the most, Eoin Morgan’s flopped as they were tamed by Pakistan in the semifinal.

The defeat is surely a huge setback for the new-look England side which has been earmarked for great things but instead of feeling bad, Root is keen to focus on the next World Cup which will be played in England too.

“This was a golden chance to win a tournament at home, and I think all we can do now is keep looking towards that World Cup and use this as a really good platform,” Root told reporters.

“We know we’re not the finished article. But we have made huge strides and we’ve got to continue to work out ways to get on the right side of these scenarios when things aren’t favourable to us,” added England’s newly-appointed Test captain.

England has enjoyed a remarkable turnaround in the 50-over format ever since they existed the 2015 World Cup at the group stage after a humiliating loss to Bangladesh. Since then, the Eoin Morgan-led side has scored a staggering 23 scores of 300-plus in only 48 matches. During that time, they also scored their highest-ever score in the ODIs when they plundered 444 against Pakistan at Trent Bridge last year. What is even more impressive is that eight of their 10 highest ODI totals have come since the last 50-over World Cup.

Admitting that the last couple of years have been a good experience for the team, Root said:

“It is a good learning curve for us but we’ve got to keep the same drive that we’ve had over the last 18 months to keep getting better so that, when that World Cup does come round, we’re in the best shape possible and give ourselves the best chance of really contending that final.”
