Champions Trophy 2017: Sri Lanka Stun India To Make Group B Exciting

Sri Lanka’s brilliant batting show saw them defeat favourites India by 7 wickets at The Oval. The wonderful victory has made the Group B completely open with all the four teams sitting with a win each from their two games facing a must situation.

This match was very important from Sri Lanka’s point of view. They not only earned crucial two points to stay alive but also jumped to the second position in the points table with the help of better net run rate (NRR) which is only less than India who will continue to stay on top for the time being due to the same NRR factor.

After being put to bat first, India managed to put up a challenging total of 321/6 in the first innings riding on Shikhar Dhawan’ century and fifties from Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni. However, the target ended up being small for the chasing side as they knocked it off with 8 balls remaining.

The stand between Danushka Gunathilaka (76 from 72 balls) and Kusal Mendis (89 from 93 balls), which yielded 159 runs in 23.1 overs, became the decisive one and the sealed the fate of the bowling side. India faced a tough time dealing with the duo as they chipped off the target slowly and steadily. Later, skipper Angelo Mathews (52 from 45 balls) and Kusal Perera (47 from 44 balls) proved their calibre with match-turning contributions.

Sri Lanka’s chase began on a bad note as opener Niroshan Dickwella went back to the pavilion in the 5th over. Things continued to remain slow for a short while as the new pair of Gunathilaka and Mendis consumed a couple of overs to settle down before former opened up in the 8th over, hitting 12 runs off Umesh Yadav. The run rate became smooth after that over the duo built the stand without much fuss.

Earlier, Shikhar Dhawan continued his good form and bettered his performance in the tournament opener against Pakistan by hammering 125 off 128 balls today. His knock served as the platform for the team to pile on their second consecutive 300 plus total.

He was involved in run accumulation till the 45th over. His time at the crease witnessed two big stands –138 runs for the first wicket with Rohit Sharma and later 82 with MS Dhoni for the 4th wicket. In between, a small 40 runs partnership was also shaped up with Yuvraj Singh for the 3rd wicket.

Once again, the last ten overs were fully utilised. A total of 103 runs came off it at the loss of three wickets which saw India’s total propel to 318/6 after being at 218/3 after the end of the 40th over.

The loss can be attributed to the bowling failure which India suffered. No one could take a single wicket barring Buvneshwar Kumar. The other dismissals were a result of run outs.

Brief Scores:

India: 321/6 in 50 overs (Shikhar Dhawan 125; Lasith Malinga 2/70)

Sri Lanka: 322/3 in 48.4 overs (Kusal Mendis 89; Bhuvenshwar Kumar 1/54)
