I Am Cheering For Women’s Team To Go All The Way And Win The World Cup, Says Suresh Raina

India discard Suresh Raina has a special message for the Indian women cricketers who are making waves in the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup.

Mithali Raj & Co. have proved their title credentials with brilliant performances so far, winning all their four games. If the first two games against England and West Indies was all about India’s batting performances, the following two against Pakistan and Sri Lanka saw the Indian bowlers joining the party with outstanding performances. The women in blue began their campaign with a 35-run win against England before thrashing West Indies by 7 wickets. In the next game against Pakistan, the Indian team managed to put up just 169 but the bowlers led by Ekta Bisht’s sensational 5-wicket haul dismissed the opposition for a paltry 74. In their fourth group game, they defeated Sri Lanka by 16 runs on Wednesday (July 5).

Four consecutive wins have put India firmly in line for a semifinal berth and Raina has given the credit to skipper Mithali Raj for leading the side well. The southpaw also said that the win against Pakistan was special.

“The Indian team is on a roll and all credit goes to Mithali (Raj) — how she is able to extract performance from the youngsters apart from doing well herself. The win against Pakistan was special and I am cheering for them to go all the way and win the World Cup,” Raina told Hindustan Times.

The India star, who is trying to win back his place in the team, had a word of praise for Deepti Sharma who scored 78 in the win against Sri Lanka. India was reeling at 38 for 2 but Deepti along with Mithali (53) not only steadied the ship but also led the foundation for a good total with an 118-run partnership for the third wicket.

“I am so proud of Deepti, the way she batted with maturity alongside Mithali, showing her intent. The wicket was on the slower side. Keeping this in mind, Deepti pushed for singles and couples to build up her innings at the start and later she went for the shots. Her shot selection was impeccable. After my training here, I watched the highlights,” Raina said.

“Deepti is going to rock again with the bat. Wait for more brilliant knocks from her. I am also surprised at the turn she is getting with her off-spinners in England,” added Raina.
